Critics Consensus

A pointless shocker and societal allegory, a film whose imagery is so gruesome as to leave you scarred for life...or rolling your eyes for 100 minutes.

Michael K I watched this because I've read so many reviews claiming this is the most disturbing movie ever made. I feel this was really just a movie made for the shock value. As if the entire goal was to, in fact, make the most disturbing movie ever. Which just made it feel empty. Sure there were a lot of grotesque and "disturbing" scenes but I didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. I didn't really care what happened to any them. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Jsksk U I thought I made horrible films or videos, but this? Oh my God. The director must eat hay for breakfast because it is not possible for anyone in their right mind to do that. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Calan S This movie is literally just stuff I can’t say, there is a huge controversial scene I can’t even mention. This movie is disgusting, hard to watch, and in general has a terrible story. Watch it at your own risk, you might throw up. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Audience Member Save yourself the hours and don’t watch this stuff. It’s gross, and boring at the same time. Just don’t. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Nigel D Hmm. Everything you’ve heard about this is probably true. Just thinking about it makes me feel uneasy. However, 3 things : from a technical pov, this is a very well made film. I was dared to watch the uncut version (Thanks Keith) and I was expecting to see some kind of tatty, snuff film that had all the quality of a fourth generation VHS tape. Not at all. What I got was a glossy, sharp widescreen affair that looked as though it had money spent on it. 2. The acting. Across the board it was very strong. I found myself caring for the lead and his family and I despised the bad guys. The actor who played Milos - that can’t have been easy playing all that out. But he did well And 3. The soundtrack. Now, that I really liked. The first 45 minutes or so of the film is the set up. Throughout this gentle minimal piano plays with the occasional grimier elements drifting in and out. However, when things go wrong, shall we say, it erupts into a dark kind of dubstep meets darkwave electronica that perfectly matches the visuals. Ah, the visuals! I think by now we all know about the two bad bits. I wish neither were there because they tarnish an ok film. The baby scene. Needless to say, its a very plastic baby and you see nothing. But you hear plenty and its clear what’s happening. Even worse, towards the end, the bit with his son. No. Too far. And thats a shame because apart from those scenes the film has a lot going for it. There’s some very dark comedy hiding in there and I did chuckle a couple of times. But that ending ! The only other films I’ve seen that left me feeling drained and world weary were Martyrs, Eden Lake and The Mist. The ending of ASF is up there with those. So, Im conflicted. Theres more to like than dislike. Compared to trash like the August Underground films or certain Japanese nasties this is classy. Its just a shame about those two aforementioned scenes. Would I recommend it ? No. I can imagine it upsetting people so please if you’re in doubt just give it a wide berth. A lot of gore fans don’t rate it as they appear to think it’s trying too hard and I get that. Am I glad I watched it ? Well, I don’t regret it but I won’t be watching it again. Its context isn’t it ? Id rather watch this than, for example, chapter 26 of the Insidious franchise or films about creepy dolls. Now, those films truly blow. But Id rather watch The Wicker Man or Dont Look Now or The Lighthouse than ASF So, 4/5 because of the things it gets right.
