DJ SPINNA, THE STORY OF WONDER-FULL, SOUL SLAM, AND THE MOST ICONIC PARTY BREAK RECORD OF ALL TIME - The Chop Shop: A Music Production Podcast (2024)

EDDDIEEEEEEE (00:02.175)
For FT, I did the official remix to Metal Things.

Spinna (00:06.77)
Whoo, metal things was sh*t.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (00:09.817)
Oh yeah, yeah. The original version of Fire too, OG did that. And the God Sons, it was like Verbal Murder. Verbal Murder and I did a record with him, the God Sons FT in Trigger the Gambler. It was called Headspinners. And that was done in D&D, that was fun, man. Come on, man, come on, man. It was just mad. You know, just bringing the records up to stretch and bobby.

Spinna (00:13.88)
Yeah.

Spinna (00:31.915)
Yeah, fun times bro, fun times.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (00:38.981)
You know, man, like, man, it's never coming back. I really hope so, but.

Spinna (00:41.662)
Yeah, fun times, bro.

Not, that ever will never be relived. It was just a time and place, especially New York. Man, it was too many things that contributed to what that, attributed to why that era was what it was. Radio being one of them because there was a lot of underground radio shows at that time, a lot of support. We had the New York.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:03.726)
Yeah.

REACT (01:09.857)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:10.521)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I just like really like at one point, man, I mean, we're gonna talk.

Spinna (01:17.322)
Yeah, let's talk about it. Let's get into it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:18.753)
Yeah man, absolutely. I mean...

REACT (01:22.533)
What record you want me to open with?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:25.809)
The record I've been probably bothering about for about five years, sending them in a DM, like send the Kenny Burke record. You even told me man, like you was like.

REACT (01:28.952)
Ah.

REACT (01:34.103)
He's smiling.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:40.969)
Yeah, I mean, like you get a million DMs and everything, but I'm like, man, I think I was there that night when you first played it.

Spinna (01:50.982)
Mobile Mondays.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:52.321)
Yeah. Did you, did you have your MP hooked up and played it that night? Did you bring your MP?

REACT (01:54.77)
Oh.

Spinna (01:58.831)
I did not, I think, well there was one night where Gene had a couple of NPCs on stage already. I didn't bring one, but there were a few that...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:03.849)
Hold on.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:08.394)
Oh yeah, yeah. Right, right.

REACT (02:09.678)
Where, Mobile Mondays was at Soul on the Horn?

Spinna (02:13.718)
No, no, no. This is before Soul in the Horn. This was at Bowery, at the electric Bowery, on Bowery Street.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:14.957)
Nah, this was...

REACT (02:20.818)
Oh yeah, okay. Yes. Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:21.35)
Yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:24.805)
whaaat? ah, it was like-

REACT (02:25.794)
But Mobile Mondays was all 45s, wasn't it?

Spinna (02:28.526)
It was based around that. Yeah, my man, my man, my man, Em's, who I go way back with, that was his brainchild. You know, to start a whole...

REACT (02:30.062)
It was right? Yeah.

REACT (02:38.094)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:39.101)
Man, we truly got a staple of just New York hip hop, man. Anyway, because we were all underground, but.

REACT (02:45.412)
Yeah.

REACT (02:49.294)
I'm just excited because this is the first real DJ we've had on the show.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (02:55.737)
Yeah, like worldly. Yeah, man, I, you know, did you ever get to meet Mike Michael Jackson?

REACT (02:58.112)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Spinna (02:58.414)
Hehehe

Spinna (03:05.166)
Unfortunately not bro, I wish I did. I wish I did, yeah. I know for sure, I know for sure that if, I know for certain if he was still on the earth I would've met him for sure. I know I would've met.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (03:07.741)
Ooh, damn, uh, you must be, you must be your homies.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (03:18.617)
Oh man, there's no question. There's no question. I mean, alright, let's get into it. I mean, we ain't have to waste no time, man.

REACT (03:19.652)
Yeah.

REACT (03:31.042)
All right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (03:34.729)
And, you know, my camera might turn off. It's all good. And if, if we have to do anything or stop it, it'll be done in post and react super, super tight with all editing and all that good stuff.

REACT (03:38.316)
Oh yeah.

REACT (03:48.73)
Yeah, recording quality, it records locally on your computer and uploads as we go. So like if you see the recording pixelated as we record, don't worry about it. It's all good. Yeah, like no reason to stop or whatever the case is.

Spinna (04:01.294)
Okay, cool.

REACT (04:05.962)
And video is, you know, it's not a video podcast. It's just a, it's audio only for now. And then I use the video for social media clips and you know, things of that nature. So yeah. I just try and give like a disclosure before we start. You know what I mean? Okay. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (04:21.317)
Yeah, maybe one of these days, man.

Spinna (04:25.186)
Cool, I was gonna ask you about that actually.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (04:29.309)
Yeah.

REACT (04:30.738)
The one video we put out, we've only put out one full episode of video which was with Focus and Denon Porter and Demjoins, which was with Read The PDF. And yeah, that was like, they specifically asked for it, you know what I mean? So I was like, alright cool. Because you know, video editing's...

Spinna (04:42.306)
Okay.

Okay.

Spinna (04:50.782)
Right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (04:53.661)
That's a whole different animal.

REACT (04:54.79)
Yeah, audio is one thing and I'm a whiz with Ableton and whatever, but the video editing stuff is like, ugh.

Spinna (05:00.438)
know about it. I know I learned during the during the pandemic how tedious that is. It's a job. How long is the interview?

REACT (05:07.414)
Yeah, very, very tedious, yeah. Yeah, so. Yeah. Oh, I mean, I try and keep, I mean, we record, I try and keep the episodes anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes, you know what I mean? If we go over and whatever, obviously, you know, I cut it out. We'll be tight though, yeah, we'll be, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (05:13.562)
Uh... Hehehehehehehehehehe Wait, what?

Spinna (05:21.346)
Okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (05:25.753)
I'll try I'll try it literally. We'll be tight tonight. Pause. I don't know if you play that game, but But uh, you know, I got a lot got a little you know, a few fruit a few my Piers and sh*t be like, yeah, I was real questionable sh*t Exactly. Every time you say I really get that or to James Brown and Screaming but uh, yeah that one

REACT (05:50.95)
It's the best one.

REACT (05:57.825)
Sorry, we won't play that game today. It's all good. All right. Let's let's roll. Here we go.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:00.652)
Heh. Eugh.

Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:06.683)
in this record.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:14.313)
You kidding me?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:20.869)
My God. Welcome to the shop shop. I am Eddie James. Next to me is my brother from another mother. Fastest hands and all the tri-state. DJ React.

REACT (06:33.443)
Yes, sir.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:35.955)
React.

REACT (06:37.674)
Yeah, I know. I know.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (06:40.257)
Like I always say we have some legends, but this guy is truly a legend, staple, worldly DJ, producer, one of the nicest guys, got the brightest smile on the planet too, man. We go way back, man, and we're going to get into it, man. I am so happy to have him, man. Like so many questions throughout the years.

REACT (06:42.83)
Yeah, we're not, yeah.

staple.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (07:08.861)
that we've been peers but really not have known each other. But we'll get into that, man. Ladies and gentlemen at the Chop Shop, we have DJ Spinner. Yeah, woo. Oh my God.

REACT (07:19.782)
We have a real DJ in the building, people. Yep. Thank you, salute, for coming on the show, sir. Appreciate it very, very much. Yeah, yeah, yes.

Spinna (07:20.252)
You.

Spinna (07:27.934)
Yo, salute. Pleasure to be here, pleasure to be here.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (07:31.913)
And by the way, that flip I've been chasing for about four years. And I'm telling you, we're going to play it again later on. It is the illest flip. One of the illest flips I heard, just mangled the records. And that record's been used a million times too. Never heard it like that.

Spinna (07:40.334)
I'm gonna go.

REACT (07:49.294)
What year you make this record?

Spinna (07:51.99)
Well, first of all, it's not even a record. It was supposed to, you know, I made it with the intention of shopping it and, you know, having somebody bust some rhymes on it, but it just never, never came to fruition. And I did that beat probably around oh, oh eight.

REACT (07:54.05)
Well, yeah.

Spinna (08:14.411)
708, yeah, around that time. 0809, somewhere around there.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (08:14.868)
Ah!

REACT (08:17.862)
craziness.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (08:18.99)
The craziness about this one, man, like we get into the flips already, like already, like, you know, straight record. And then just that's how the pads, you just had them on the pads, had the chops on the pads and just how can I just mangle this record? And, uh, I was perfect.

Spinna (08:31.807)
Exactly.

Spinna (08:36.098)
Exactly, exactly. Strictly 3000 right there.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (08:40.945)
Yeah, man. Oh, man. Thank you so much for coming on once again, Spinner. You know, there are a lot of DJs and a lot of producers that I've come across and listened to in my lifetime that had impact, a few, excuse me. And it's very important that this interview is important because I never got a chance to tell you.

REACT (08:41.416)
Ah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (09:10.629)
Um, and I mean this when, uh, I first moved down here to New York, the tri-state area, um, because I was born and raised in Syracuse and I went to Syracuse university. And we'll talk about that too. Um, you know, I didn't, I didn't really have, I was automatically in the underground and, you know, um, we're talking about 95, um, nine, you know, the mid nineties. So.

the underground presence was heavy, you know, future flavors, Stretch and Bob Ito, you know, shows like that, man, the venues were crazy. And I distinctly remember your records, you know, because we were in the same vein, just same pocket when it came to producing, you know, jazz and a lot of Rhodes heavy.

you know, hard drums, you know, style of production. And we know each other, we know, we're looking on records. So I believe I went to Fat Beats and I was talking to Eclipse and I was just grabbing records and stuff like that. He was like, yo, you might wanna grab this record. And I was like, jig masters record. I was like, jig masters. I'm like, okay.

And automatically, man, I was like.

Spinna (10:42.692)
Hehehehehehe

EDDDIEEEEEEE (10:43.697)
I was like, here we go. Like, you know, other than, you know, the people that we looked up to, like the Pete Rocks and the tips and, and large professors, um, you know, you were, you, I've said you and Sean J period. And we had Sean, he did the very first show for the chop shop. You and Sean J for me were like, okay, these are the guys that, you know,

Spinna (11:05.096)
Oh wow.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (11:12.797)
that I see within my range that are almost on the same level. And I've seen your ascension in real time, man. I was like, this guy's amazing, man. So kudos to you, man. I always tell people, man, it's OK to be fans. And I'm a super fan. I am a super DJ Spinner fan. I know you started DJing.

Spinna (11:36.174)
Thank you, brother.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (11:43.017)
I think the tender age of 11, man. Can you tell us about your early days in Brooklyn, a DJ, being a DJ and then transitioning to production?

Spinna (11:56.174)
Wow, well, you know, I started dabbling with 12s, turntables I should say, not 12s, but turntables. I'd say I was really more like 12, 13 to be exact. And I was influenced by, you know, local DJs in my neighborhood. In interviews, I've been mentioning the local DJ crew that came up on my...

in Crown Heights, they were called the Laser Rock Disco, and they used to play all the block parties in Crown Heights. I just actually learned that they did parties beyond my block on President Street. They were all over New York and New York City, Brooklyn and New York City.

and they even shared the same DJ space as Grandmaster Flowers. They were DJing in the same venue at one point. These guys were around since 77 to the early 80s. So I watched them. They were big influences on me, as well as any local party that was happening in somebody's basem*nt or...

you know, whatever, like just, it was part of my surroundings. And of course radio played a big influence. You know, I really loved listening to early, you know, radio show mixes. You know, we talking like the days of 92KTU and WBLS, Kiss FM, Chet Pettybone.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (13:13.382)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (13:23.75)
Mm-hmm.

REACT (13:29.074)
Mm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (13:32.855)
Oh wow, yeah.

Spinna (13:34.69)
There was a grand mixer that recently transitioned. His name was Ted Currier. He was like probably the first disco DJ on radio right before Tony Humphreys, right before Chappetty Bone, who actually went on to produce. You know what I'm saying? Like Ted Currier was the producer for Boogie Boys.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (13:52.113)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:02.749)
Oh yeah, yeah. That was, yeah, I remember that.

Spinna (14:03.678)
He did You Ain't Fresh, he did Fly Girl, he did all those records, but he started off as a DJ and I was able to connect with him about 10 years ago when we did this Red Bull New York City radio documentary.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:07.698)
Yeah, fly girl, yeah. I was, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:14.002)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:21.683)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (14:22.546)
you know, learned a lot from listening to people like him. So, you know, I was always into records, always into DJing. And then in the 80s, you know, I felt like the next progression for a producer was definitely becoming for DJs, definitely becoming a producer. So I started going into recording studios around 1985, you know, with.

I was part of a hip hop group since 85, you know, with friends that I came up with, which evolved into Jigmasters in the 90s. So I've been messing around in the studio since 85.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:50.505)
Okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (14:57.405)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (15:01.565)
Trust me, I know what it's like to be in those early hip hop groups. Did you? Or?

Spinna (15:07.042)
Yeah, and I used to run and I used to run too. I was actually rapping Yeah, you know I was actually I but I hated my voice every time I heard my voice and played back Especially in 85 my voice hadn't fully changed this and it was wild high like I had a crazy high-pitched voice

REACT (15:21.926)
the

EDDDIEEEEEEE (15:23.607)
Yeah, yeah. Wait, wait, I mean, were you like, were you spinner back there? Were you like, you know, I'm not gonna give you a comment, but were you like, V nice, V nice, what up? Get on the mic.

Spinna (15:31.838)
Nah, I didn't, you know what's funny is I didn't have, you know at one point, you know everybody was a Ski. Everybody had Ski attached to their name. You know, my, yeah, I called myself Vince Ski at one point. Yeah, not as a rapper, but. Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha.

REACT (15:41.474)
Shouse is key beats.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (15:42.959)
Yeah, right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (15:46.625)
Ah, let's say, okay, that's dope. Hey yo, Vince, what up? Get on the mic and show us up. I'm Vince Nice. Nah, nah, nah. Yeah.

Spinna (15:56.17)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, you know, just like most people who were coming up in that era, we were trying to get on, you know, by any means necessary. And of course DJing, oh, for sure. I still got all my old cassettes with pause tape loops and stuff like that. Still got them.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (15:57.565)
That's dope.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (16:03.793)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (16:07.613)
Were you pause taping back then too? Yeah.

REACT (16:14.065)
Wow.

Spinna (16:17.226)
One day I'm gonna put those up on the gram. I also have all my practice tapes. I used to record myself when I was learning how to DJ and mixing and blending and putting two records together and early cuts and all of that, not even that tight. I have all those recordings. I have them all.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (16:20.893)
Yeah.

REACT (16:35.331)
Mm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (16:39.875)
Man, do you ever just go ahead and react?

REACT (16:41.142)
I found my, no, it's funny he said that. I found my first, I wanna say about a month ago, two months ago, I found my first ever mix that I made in a studio, it was like 99, and I listened back to that sh*t in the car and I was like, man, this is terrible. It was so bad, but it felt, it,

you know, it was humbling, like, man, like, wow, like, you know what I mean? Like...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (17:07.91)
Yeah.

Spinna (17:09.49)
Yeah, it's nostalgic too. You look back and you're like, man, I can't believe where I was back then, you know? It's kind of cool. It's kind of cool though. Even though you...

REACT (17:14.618)
Right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (17:14.661)
Oof, man. I mean, but.

REACT (17:17.762)
It is cool, it is cool, because you listen to it and it's like, man, wow, 14 years old, or however old I was, in a recording studio in the Bronx, recording a mixtape. Like I had no business in the South Bronx. You're 13, 14 years old, little white Italian kid, recording, you know what I mean? Like, it's just like, it's crazy to me. But yeah, that's cool that you still have all that old stuff, man.

Spinna (17:37.25)
Yeah.

Spinna (17:43.042)
Yeah, I just kept them.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (17:44.493)
Do you ever just for sh*ts and giggles just pop in one of them, pause, just to listen to it?

Spinna (17:53.425)
Mmm, not really, not really.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (17:54.281)
Because I say that because I have, I have like me and my cousin, self Marcel, I have our early records, I think dating back to like, I think either 89, and boy oh boy. I mean, I guess for the time it was really fresh, it was really fresh, but man, when I listen to it now.

I can only listen to maybe like literally like 30 seconds of it. I was like, all right, this is enough. This is, I mean, it sounds crazy. You know, everything was 110 BPMs and just super. Yeah. I mean, like, do you even remember like, I mean, I'm so glad you're on the show too, because I mean, you were true. You were just like New York City DJ.

Spinna (18:31.743)
Is- is-

Spinna (18:36.345)
It's definitely for giggles.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (18:51.593)
Brooklyn native man. So during that time, do you ever, do you remember you said, you mentioned Shep Pettibone and he got into producing. I think he worked with Madonna too, right? That's why I know the name, right? But do you remember the Latin rascals? Like the line? Yeah, like.

Spinna (19:03.858)
Oh yeah, he did Vogue. He did Vogue.

Spinna (19:11.33)
Hell yeah, hell yeah. So they were hot, like right before Red Alert and Chuck Chilow got on, they were the dudes. They were the ones killing it on the radio.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (19:15.877)
Yes. Yeah. They would like do the master mix. I remember there was like one time, like, because I, my cousin, you know, lives in the Bronx and I got a tape from him coming down here. And I remember, because I was pause taping and I remember it was like a master mix. They were like five minutes of funk and all those records.

Spinna (19:35.102)
Yep, that's the most legendary one that they did for hip hop. They had AJ Scratch, they had It's Yours, they had Fantasy III, It's Your Rock. Man, I memorized that joint. I taped it on the radio when it aired and I listened to that tape over and over and over again. That...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (19:40.91)
Yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (19:47.131)
Yo, react.

REACT (19:49.568)
No.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (19:55.934)
One of the greatest mixes I've ever heard, it literally put the battery in my back because we were starting to do pause mixes. But after I heard that, I was like, man, this is what I'm gonna try to do.

Spinna (20:13.682)
Nah, me tell you...

Let me tell you something, man. Those dudes were ahead of their time and they did things with tape that cannot be duplicated even with the technology that we have now. Like, because you had to, the way we think about making beats with limitations on the old machines, they were doing things that we would do on the SB-1200, you know, or better, with reel-to-reel machines. And every time you heard something repeat and, you know,

EDDDIEEEEEEE (20:31.602)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (20:44.13)
these shotgun type edits, they had to record, they had to record all those pieces over and over and over and over again in order to edit them and put them together. Every cut had to be precise. And it's a science to it, bro. Like it's nothing, it's mind blowing stuff. It's mind blowing.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (20:47.325)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (21:01.33)
Yeah, react. If you go to YouTube, that mix that Spinner and I are talking about is probably on YouTube. I just remember the five minutes of fun because it was like, it was like five, five minutes. Yeah, man. So, you know, your earlier days, you were pausing mixing and then

REACT (21:01.546)
Yeah.

REACT (21:07.585)
It's up there. Mm-hmm, it is.

Spinna (21:09.772)
It is, definitely is.

Spinna (21:16.959)
Yeah, it's crazy. It's unbelievable.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (21:28.325)
and then your transition into production drum machines. Talk about the drum machines, the equipment that you had, and stuff like that.

Spinna (21:36.226)
So I didn't own actual machines for a long time. I learned how to use them going into the studios. And I didn't start, I didn't really start on my own machines until 90, I would say 93, yeah, around 93.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (21:38.97)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (21:58.942)
and the machines of choice was the SP-1200 and the Akai 950. The SP-1200 that I got was actually from Todd Terry after I did the bounce record. The Todd Terry gave me his SP-1200 after I did that bounce record. And it's the same machine that he used for all his earlier records. So all that Todd, all the black, the black riot, Todd Terry

EDDDIEEEEEEE (22:09.862)
Wait a minute, the Todd Terry?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (22:25.981)
Man.

REACT (22:26.603)
Wow.

Spinna (22:29.156)
Royal House, Girl Out House, you all that stuff. The machine that he did those records on is in my room right now. Yeah. And you know what? The bounce record, I did that before I had the actual machine. That was a pause tape idea.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (22:30.5)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (22:38.009)
Oh my god, that is crazy. Man.

Spinna (22:54.392)
And I had a Digitech 7.6 sampler. It's a little rack unit. Right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (23:00.543)
I remember, yeah, I remember that. I had the Digitech 5000, the 8000 Digitech. It was like the little square pedal, uh, guitar pedal thing and had to hit it manually.

Spinna (23:08.042)
Yep. Yep, I remember that. But that's how, with that Digitech, is how I made beats for a long time. So, you know, I would just loop pieces, lay it down on my eight-track, I had a eight-track Tascam cassette, Porter Studio. So it's literally loop, lay the beat down, you know, like drums, find the drums first, loop the drums, lay that down, find the loop.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (23:27.506)
Team Task Am.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (23:32.072)
Yeah.

Yeah.

Spinna (23:37.822)
you know, BPM it, you know, match the BPM with the turntable, loop that, find the piece, lay that down on top of the beat on a second track, come back, find another sound, lay that down, filter bass lines, EQ, lay that down. And then if, and then it's like, if there's little tiny chops or whatever, I'm literally hitting the button, triggering it with my finger and printing that to tape. And then that would...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (23:49.573)
Yeah, all a bit, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (24:01.713)
I was doing mine the dumb way, like literally, like what you just said to me, man, I was literally doing mine the stupid way. I was literally drum machine and like, and literally tapping the sample for three minutes, the first sample for like three minutes. And if you messed up, okay. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It was absolutely, I mean, it was tedious.

Spinna (24:20.994)
That's what I'm talking about. Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Same thing, same idea.

Spinna (24:30.474)
It's tedious, but you know, you got sharp working that way because by the time you got machines, you know, you're unstoppable because you done did all the hard work already doing it the other way.

REACT (24:34.873)
Bye.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (24:38.136)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (24:42.994)
All right, so to our audience, man, we have to put things into context too. You mentioned the record bounce. A lot of people do not know that this record will live forever. It's forever one of the greatest party records on the planet. Anytime you play it, every time I play it, it's on.

REACT (24:58.166)
Forever.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (25:10.833)
That's when the party literally starts or you can play it in the middle and people going crazy. And when I found out, we're going to play the record too. When I found out that you did this record, I was already out of college. However, rewind real quick. I first learned about DJ Spinner because I went to Syracuse University and you went to Binghamton.

And I believe you, I think you DJed one of a few parties up at Syracuse. I don't know if you did a Greek freak of ours. Yeah. And I remember I was like, first of all, I didn't DJ it. And I was like, I'm not DJing. I'm like, I'm like, who is DJing right now? I was like, I'm like killing it. And I see, I actually see a younger, a young DJ Spender.

Spinna (25:47.51)
I did, I did, yes, I did.

Spinna (26:03.19)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (26:11.253)
And I was like, who is this dude, man? And then I remember going to, um, back and back and forth to your parties in Binghamton. Like this is before, like, I mean, like, I mean, this is, this just can't make this sh*t up and like, crazy. I'm not doing, but do you remember, um, the third bass concert at Binghamton? We, um, I think it was in 91 third bass and.

Spinna (26:21.974)
Alright.

REACT (26:27.494)
That's wow. That's crazy, man. Full circle.

Spinna (26:29.442)
Yeah.

Spinna (26:38.357)
I, yeah, vaguely, yeah, vaguely, yeah, I do.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (26:40.813)
Yeah, like, because we were actually managed by Pete Nice and my cousin and I, I think, KRS-1 was there that night. I think it was KRS-1. Yeah, KRS-1 and Third Bass. I don't know if you DJ or not, but I do. I just I remember I don't know if we dapped up or whatever, or I was just in the back just. Tight. I mean, when I tell you people he was killing it.

Spinna (26:50.501)
Yeah, Caravus one did come up. Yep, he came up.

Spinna (27:04.758)
It's possible, man, it's possible. It's very possible.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (27:10.553)
So fast forward to this record, I'm like, man, party record. And then when I heard that the name Spinner did it, I was like, oh my god, this dude, man. Because it wasn't competition, but it was competition. Who do I need to surround myself with or compete with in those days? But undeniably,

one of the greatest party records ever created. If you can just play it for the people real quick.

REACT (27:41.934)
Oh yeah, 100%. I'll play it, but on the story, since we're on the story game real quick, I started DJing in 97, 98, right before I went to high school. I'm a little younger than you guys, obviously. But this was the first record I ever bought. And yeah, this was the first piece of vinyl, this is a real...

Spinna (28:07.444)
What?

REACT (28:12.002)
Real story. I swear to God, hand to God, the first piece of vinyl that I ever bought, well, shouts to Papa React. He's the one who bought it, not me, because I was 12, 13. It was at the music factory on Fordham Road. I'll never forget it, because it was the first day and the first time I ever bought a piece of vinyl. I bought this, and I bought a

Spinna (28:12.182)
Wow. Are you kidding me? It's crazy. Yeah. It's crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (28:16.27)
Hahaha

REACT (28:43.195)
It was the bounce I bought and I bought Redman's album. I forgot what album it was. It wasn't, was it Doc's name? No, his first, Muddy Waters, correct. Yeah, Doc's name came out in 2000. So yeah, it was Muddy Waters. Those two pieces of vinyl, specifically I remember because I bought Doubles, right? This is when I first started DJing. And I just remember hearing Flex on the radio.

Spinna (28:52.682)
probably the second one. Muddy Waters, the second one, second one.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (28:53.696)
Uh, no, it was probably muddy waters and the energy. Yeah.

Right. Yeah.

REACT (29:13.216)
just mutilating this record. And I was like, man, I'm gonna go home and I'm gonna attempt to do exactly what this dude is doing on the radio with this record. So anyways, yes, this was the first piece of vinyl I ever bought and I still have it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (29:23.356)
Yeah

EDDDIEEEEEEE (29:28.737)
Before even before we even play it, did you notice that? Did you know the impact of this record when you did it? Like, like, first of all, when you did it and you pressed it up, or was it what label was it through? First of all.

Spinna (29:29.23)
That's dope.

Spinna (29:45.15)
It was on Freeze, it was on Freeze, Todd Terry's label, Freeze Records.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (29:48.828)
Okay, okay, all right. Man, like.

Spinna (29:55.014)
And I didn't know, I actually, no way, no one really knows, you might have an idea, but you don't really know how big a record's gonna be. Or sometimes you think a record's gonna be big and you're disappointed, but I really didn't know what that impact was, but I found out real quick. Because it blew up, it blew up instantaneous, like instantly, it blew up.

REACT (30:13.807)
Mm-hmm

Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (30:18.065)
me is insane. Like, like, do you remember when put your hands on my eyes can see came out in 97? Like it was like over and over. But I'm telling you right now that bounce record man, automatically in the in all those party joins, let me clear my throat, blah, blah. Bounce that bounce record was one of the original records, man. Did you get all your money for that? Did they pay

Spinna (30:26.013)
Absolutely.

Spinna (30:45.519)
Man, you know, the SP 1200 was part of the deal, but I didn't ask for it. Like, it was almost like, oh, we're not gonna pay you, but here, take this machine, and I'm happy with that. You know what I mean?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (30:48.601)
Okay. All right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (30:57.613)
You know why? Because peace is just a tattoo. Because, you know, they were like, man, this record is, man, every week they were like.

Spinna (31:04.062)
And I did get an upfront check, but it was really small. And not for nothing, there's a lot of samples in that joint. And I mean, of course, they technically should have been cleared, but it was kind of released as a promo only thing for DJs, very obsolete.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (31:10.457)
Right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (31:15.933)
Oh, yeah, you didn't have to clear those either. Yeah

Spinna (31:29.838)
kind of presentation on the record, no artwork. It almost looks like a bootleg, and that's why nobody really knows what label it's on. But Freeze pressed it up. Yeah, it was gone for a while. Yeah, it was hard to get for a while. It definitely was.

REACT (31:34.638)
Yep.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (31:37.331)
Yeah.

REACT (31:37.986)
I remember that sh*t being sold out everywhere too.

Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (31:44.165)
I couldn't find that rock and soul. I remember that. I was like, man, I had, I think I had like one record. I have one of them, but that one was enough, but needless to say, man, like one, yeah, here we go.

REACT (31:55.418)
this show I'm not gonna play it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (32:11.355)
Do the elbows. Bow bow bow. Ha ha ha.

REACT (32:13.368)
It's just... I just like. But it brings me back to like. When I first started DJing, man, like, you don't. This sh*t is crazy to me, bro. It's crazy.

Crazy.

That's, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (32:34.801)
But well produced too, because you got the top bill in.

REACT (32:42.34)
Yeah

EDDDIEEEEEEE (32:46.373)
I mean, just on point, B.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (32:51.465)
Do you ever, I mean, when you hear it, like when you're in the clubs, do you ever just like, like chuckle a little bit?

Spinna (32:57.611)
Bro, listen, I was at the Barclays Center, I'm forgetting who I went to see, but Flex was playing between the groups and he dropped it, bro, and it was like the place exploded. This was recently, this was maybe like a couple of months ago, to the point that people thought he made that record.

REACT (33:15.674)
Mm-hmm. Still.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (33:17.317)
Yes, yeah. Yeah.

Spinna (33:22.638)
A lot of people thought he made the record, because around that time, he was making party break records too. But yeah, I still get goosebumps, man, of course. I mean, it's a classic.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (33:27.601)
right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (33:32.476)
Oh man, just to-

REACT (33:32.922)
But this was like one of the original, like one of the first party records, man. And it was in that same lane, because I know off camera, I asked you what label it was, and you just mentioned that, but Shouts to Crook and Clan, AV8 records. A lot of the AV8 breaks came after this. I feel like that this record really influenced all that whole movement.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (33:39.546)
It was.

Spinna (33:40.935)
One of them, yeah.

Spinna (33:56.558)
Right, well the first, the very first one was my man Kenny Doak, Buckethead, Supercat, the Easy Supercat. And he actually, so there's a line here, there's a through line here. So Todd and Kenny grew up together. Todd, Kenny did a lot of records for Freeze as well.

REACT (34:04.703)
Yes, Kenny Dove.

REACT (34:16.78)
Okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (34:22.341)
Okay. Yeah.

Spinna (34:23.318)
You know, squeaky Dan and you know, house joints, you know, and.

Spinna (34:33.258)
I met Kenny during this time, right after this bounce record was made around the freeze period. And I've been telling this story, so you might see this online at another interview or two, but the SB 1200 that I got from Todd used to have this sticker.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (34:45.181)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (34:52.745)
Awesome.

Spinna (34:59.202)
this sticker running across the top of it that said Todd Terry still rocks. In 98, me and Kenny Doe went to go dig in Portland, buy records in Portland. It was, you know, Portland till this day is one of the greatest cities for digging. And I told them about, you know, the SB 1200 story and the sticker and he was like,

I made that sticker. I put that sticker on Todd's machine. So it was like full circle at that point. And another thing is I met Todd prior to this freeze period. There's a studio out in Coney Island, Tony D studio, where Search made his first record, with Jungle Brothers.

did some of their records. The first album was recorded there. I met Todd while he was mixing the Jungle Brothers record. The Inspector Gadget Bad Boys record with K Love was recorded there as well, which Todd Terry produced. A lot of people don't know Todd Terry actually did that record. Yeah, so I met Todd around that time. That had to be like 87. Around 87.

REACT (36:01.935)
Mm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (36:05.382)
Yeah, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (36:10.431)
Ooh, Diddy. That record is crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (36:19.721)
All right.

Spinna (36:22.73)
And I had to remind Todd of that, that we actually encountered when we met during the, when we re-encountered during the freeze period, I reminded him that we had met back in the 80s, like earlier. So there's like this whole connection with Kenny and Kenny is like, you know, that's my, that's my sensei. Yeah, that's my, that's my sensei.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (36:40.449)
full circle too right almost like oh my god the great Kenny dope and I mean I mean if we can we have we have to put we have to put him on the list too

REACT (36:50.434)
No, I know. He did that Bucketheadz record too. Kenny Dobre. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Spinna (36:53.29)
Yeah, that's what I was just saying. That's the super record. That was the first one. That was the big party break record that basically changed the game and set the tone for those kind of joints.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (36:53.947)
Oh yeah. Yeah.

REACT (37:03.962)
Right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (37:06.173)
Yeah, I mean, speaking of party records too, we just lost a great legend. I mean, if not the greatest party record ever, the 900 number, the great Mark 45 King, man. Shouts goes out to his family, our condolences. Let's talk about, I know, I mean, there's so much material, man, because-

Spinna (37:16.29)
Yeah, 45K, man.

REACT (37:33.902)
Yeah, it's so much, man.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (37:35.881)
because you've done so much in your lifetime. I really don't wanna go past the mark that you made with the Jigmasters, man. So speak about how you guys came to be. Because those are the first, really without me knowing about the Bounce record, that's the DJ Spinner that I came to know and love. Yep.

Spinna (38:02.626)
Thank you. Well, so Krim and I grew up together. You know, we met on the block. And Jigmasters initially was a four man group. One of the members was part of the group that I was in back in the 80s. It was me, him and another guy. And how can I say this to make it make sense?

When it was the four-man group, Crim was always there. He came to me with the idea after I had disbanded from the prior groups to form Jig Masters. So Jig Masters was kind of his brainchild.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (38:35.337)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (38:44.985)
Is this the polyrhythmic addicts? Okay.

Spinna (38:47.526)
Nah, this is probably, this was later. Probably this was later. Totally different group. So Jigmasters was a four man group. Two of the guys left and it ended up, you know, ended up dwindling down to me and Kren. And by that time, you know, after we, we had a demonstration deal with East West Records in 94. We had four songs done. We had a single ready, almost ready to go.

We were having meetings with product management, you know, trying to, coming up with the marketing for the single and everything. And then East West and Electra merged and turned into ERG Group. And, you know, half of the staff got fired, including the people that were handling our projects, so they dropped us. Around that time too, Juggernauts was there, Supernatural was there, 8 Off the Assassin was there.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (39:27.953)
I remember that.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (39:40.841)
That's right.

Spinna (39:44.854)
Das effects was there. So this was during that period. But I say that to say that, after all of those years of trying to get signed and almost getting signed, we decided to start the Beyond Real label. And that's when we put out the first Beyond Real in 96 and Iz UD and the rest is history. And then we had like a whole stable of artists, Oh, World of Sorda, IGF, Hazardous, my man,

EDDDIEEEEEEE (40:10.601)
That's right. All right. I just think of it because there were, I mean, there were, there were a few of, a few of them, um, you know, a few underground labels at the time. And, and, you know, um, shouts to them. I know, right. I know. It was, man, it was, and we were talking prior to this interview, man. And, and I think I, like, I definitely.

Spinna (40:22.434)
There were a lot of underground labels at the time. There were tons of them. That was the golden era for underground. Golden era, man.

REACT (40:26.898)
Haha

EDDDIEEEEEEE (40:38.845)
once we started talking about, I got goosebumps now. It's just like, man, it automatically had a flashback about those years with yourself, Jigmasters, Mr. Complex, Pumpkinhead, like natural elements.

Spinna (40:58.55)
Natural resources, natural elements, Mr. Voodoo, Adagio. Bro, we can go, J, shout out to my brother J Live, Shabam Siddique, before he was on, Shabam, before he was on Rawkus, Shermenalik, like, it was a lot of people, man. A lot, a lot of artists.

REACT (41:03.851)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (41:06.313)
Jay live, peace to Jay live.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (41:11.625)
Yeah.

REACT (41:14.818)
Natural elements, man. Shouts to Charlamagne too. Charlamagne was on the show. Yeah, we had Char on the show, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (41:14.861)
And, and, oh, yo, when I tell you, that's right. That's right. He was, that's right. Show pizza. Charlemagne. Yep. Um, but, um, you know, like, I guess like, um, to be on real record was, was the one I like when I was like automatically. Th th this is like, all right. This guy.

Spinna (41:39.945)
Yeah, wait till you hear, one day I'm gonna reveal the sample source for that.

REACT (41:44.988)
Oh, oh.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (41:46.865)
Whoo! Play the record, play the remix. Oh, there you go.

REACT (41:48.56)
Hehehe

Spinna (41:48.866)
Yeah

EDDDIEEEEEEE (42:23.089)
Man.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (42:31.609)
Oh man, I'll tell you right now, I got goosebumps. Spitted like, man, this is the true essence of, this is how New York became the beat. It came to be like, seriously, like it was built on the golden age, the golden era, but really like the 90s, 90s underground, man. Like some of the greatest groups came out of it, man. And you speak about,

REACT (42:53.463)
Ah, there's nothing like it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (42:59.665)
You spoke about you guys being signed early on with East West. Is that how you parlay the Das FX Microphone Master Record?

Spinna (43:11.306)
Yeah, that is how that happened. I was kind of in, I was in the system.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (43:12.909)
Okay, I wanna tell you something about that.

When I tell you, like I already knew about it, about you, but when I got that record, I had the, I think I had the test pressing or whatever. No, I didn't get the test pressing. I had the regular record, I bought the record. And I looked and I saw spit out it. I was like, this dude is killing it. And it was one of my favorite. I'll tell you, I played this record and

And when I looked...

I looked at the record and it was sitting right in front of my face, the Amager Bar 74 record. I was like... And I used to just play the record but never even thought, man, this record right here, man.

Spinna (43:57.165)
Yep.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (44:07.333)
This was it right here. I was like, okay, this guy is doing like, he's doing crazy records right now.

Spinna (44:14.118)
So I gotta give props to my man, Joc Maxx, that assist, that co-remixed this with me. Yeah, man, so he was in the group called Basem*nt Chemist that we also released on Beyond Real. But he was an incredible rapper and beat maker and I kind of...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (44:19.27)
Yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (44:24.045)
Okay. Piece of jock mask. I did see that too. Respect. Salute. Yeah.

Spinna (44:43.37)
partnered up with him for some of those earlier records because he's from Kansas, man. Kansas City, Kansas. And so I was out there because from a previous relationship that I was in and she was there, the female was there to work. So I basically followed her. She moved out there and I was just with her. And I was looking.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (44:51.418)
How'd you meet him?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (44:59.901)
Okay. Yeah.

Spinna (45:13.33)
for record stores, like any vinyl junkie would do in a new city, you know what I mean? And I looked in the Yellow Pages and saw a couple of stores, so I hit the stores up. One particular store that I went to called Seventh Heaven.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (45:15.793)
Hehehe, right.

Yeah, yeah.

Spinna (45:28.018)
I went asking for old records or whatever, and the guy that was there was like, oh, you need to come back tomorrow and speak to Jock Max. He knows all the spots. So I came back, and we connected. We went digging, and then I went to his basem*nt, and he started playing me all these incredible beats. And then he played me his group, and I was completely blown away, because these guys sounded like they were straight up from New York. When you think of Kansas, you don't think about, that doesn't,

EDDDIEEEEEEE (45:45.193)
Oh.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (45:53.512)
Right.

Spinna (45:58.032)
vibe or sound that comes to your mind. Exactly. So now these guys had flavor and I actually helped them to get a demo deal as well with Elektra, which also didn't pan out. But they made some incredible records. But Jacques, man.

REACT (45:58.577)
I think Wizard of Oz when I think of Kansas.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (46:01.161)
Hehehe

Spinna (46:18.702)
special dude, one of my best, closest friends in the world, and super talented, man. So he did that, and he did the Dayla Soul remix with me. I happened to be, and those are my first two remixes. Those remixes came to me, and I was out there, and I just brought them in, and we made it happen. Actually, the Dayla mix, I got a mail, a letter from Tommy Boy Records.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (46:30.665)
Go.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (46:47.493)
Right. You were affiliated with Tommy Boy, right? I believe, so to speak. Okay.

Spinna (46:48.162)
I don't know if I can... Yeah, later, later. Jigmasters, they had formed a label called Black Tommy Boy Black Label, where they were trying to compete with the raucouses and trying to tap into that indie market, but it was a little too late by that point. This is like late 90s. They wanted this...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (46:57.062)
That's right. Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (47:06.569)
Yeah. All right. And you double dipping because you're, you're actually on, you're doing records with Rockets too. You were like, Oh, okay. Post-rockets. Okay.

REACT (47:07.802)
Hmm

Spinna (47:17.226)
No, but this was post-Ruckus, believe it or not. So Black Label was like 2000, 99, 2000. At that point, the Ruckus situation had been, you know, was over, but I'm digressing. So the Tommy Boy situation.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (47:23.019)
Oh, okay, yeah, okay.

Spinna (47:36.69)
I got that letter requesting to do this De La remix. That was a mind blowing experience, man. I was in New York at the time when that happened and the way that beat came together, Jock came up, we found the sample, the Fender Rhodes piece together in a record store. He programmed the drums.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (47:55.938)
Oh, mm-hmm.

Spinna (48:01.838)
a basic beat, he had the Rhodes loop, he sent me the disc, the floppies, and then I reprogrammed it, reprogrammed the drums to fit the vocals and added like my bubbly, spacey things and replayed the bass line, the shaker. Yeah, you know that. Right, you know what that is. Right. So that's how that whole thing came together.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (48:03.356)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (48:17.929)
The shaker too, right? The shaker. I know that. That's a DJ space. Yeah. I did notice that, man. Yeah, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (48:30.641)
man, well the tambourine I meant. Man, okay so like this record, I'm glad you brought it up because this record right here was really the DJ Spinner has arrived record, like for real because the original obviously done by JD, I was like well.

how good could the remix be? And I remember having both one, both copies. I think there was one, I think I had the one with, it was a picture of Mace and a little ass dog. Yeah, like, right, and I remember getting it and I was like, okay, this remix. I'm like, man, how is it gonna either be as equal or outdo? And I'm telling you right now, when I heard yours, I was like, I was like.

Spinna (49:13.002)
Yeah, the super sweet steaks, baby. The super sweet steaks. Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (49:30.845)
Man, this dude Spina is on, he is, he has arrived. This was the record, for real. I was a little aggy too, and I was like, damn. I was like, yo, react, I was like, I'm in the dust.

REACT (49:47.359)
Hehe.

Spinna (49:48.559)
And I connected with Dilla around that record. That's when we first connected. I was actually working with Jay Smooth and A.V. at the Underground Railroad Show on WBAI.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (49:52.624)
Uh-uh.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (50:04.94)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (50:06.37)
And Tribe, Call Quest came up to promote Beats Rhymes in life, and Dilla was with them. So that was the first time I met them, was when they were on air. So we were talking about the machines that we use and all that type of stuff.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (50:14.073)
Yeah. I mean.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (50:21.853)
Yeah, I met Dilla once at Studio A, because I used to record there in Detroit through my best friend DC, because he's from Detroit with his group, his cousins. And I met him there. I know that you and Dilla were homies. Man, can you speak to his impact? I mean, you spoke about it. I've seen in interviews and stuff like that before.

years ago but um you know a lot of people think that you know like we all came from the same class of you know I want to call sons of what yeah we can say sons of Pete Rock and tip and large professor and Dilla is one of them too but can you because there was some different sh*t going on with

EDDDIEEEEEEE (51:19.601)
I mean, automatically when I heard the difference between Midnight Marauders and the low, excuse me, Meets Rhymes and Live, it was just super, it was darker. Like I've never, the sub bass was another one that throughout the songs, it fluctuating, you know, all kinds of crazy, actually the very first song.

um, phony rappers, when the baseline doesn't come into like the, the final, um, final first, and it's just like, it's like a, like just, just craziness. And then it starts bouncing and it was just crazy. Can you speak about, um, your, like your first thoughts about his production?

and how he influenced you, because you spoke about how he influenced you as well, as a pair.

Spinna (52:21.214)
Yeah, well, you know, with every genre, there's always gonna be the one person that comes around and just changes everything. You know, we've seen it with rock, we've seen it with jazz, with the likes of Coltrane and Miles Davis. With rock, we've seen it with Jimi Hendrix. And with hip hop, we have a few of those.

I credit Molly Moll as the godfather, you know what I'm saying? When it comes to samples. And I also have to, now in hindsight, I have to put 45 King on that pedal stool too, because he came up around the same time and the way he revolutionized samples and sampling and the way he heard samples.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (53:03.858)
Oh yeah.

Spinna (53:14.47)
was unlike any other, you know what I'm saying? And Dilla was like that for hip hop in general.

his impact on me specifically, he taught me to think outside the box even more than I already was thinking. You know, I felt like I was already outside the box because when you listen to Stakes is High remix and you know Microphone Master and you know the MC8 remixes, those records don't sound like anything else but when you listen to his joints, he was a lot more

EDDDIEEEEEEE (53:28.442)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (53:38.141)
Absolutely.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (53:42.99)
No they don't.

Spinna (53:50.486)
unquantized in his thought process. And a free thinker, not giving an F, and you know, loose, super loose. I never really thought to work outside of quantization, you know what I mean? Like, I...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (53:53.313)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:02.767)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:06.354)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:11.613)
Yeah.

Spinna (54:13.398)
I'm the guy that locks in. He didn't lock in and he was super loose with it. And I think that's what we're left with. All these crazy, loose, out of control, sloppy beats that we're hearing, it's thanks to him. Like he's the king of that. He's the king of that. And as far as even on the digging, like vinyl looking for samples.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:20.71)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:24.165)
Ugh.

REACT (54:28.704)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (54:28.941)
It is. Yeah.

Spinna (54:37.782)
You know, a lot of us spent tons of money on super rare records. Super, you know, obscure, hard to find stuff that, you know.

REACT (54:46.318)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (54:50.818)
Collectibles, you know, collectible records, you know what I mean? Stuff that raises the value of your collection. He did pretty much the opposite. Yes, he had some expensive super rare records like Tariqa Blue, you know, the record he used for Badu, for example, but there's so many dollar bin, 50 cent, two dollar holla records.

cheap records, you listen to the records, you would never think to use them. Like you would just not, you know, his choice of samples, bro, like his ear, the way he heard music, it was, there was no, he had an inner ear like no other person. And he definitely made everyone think differently and think you can sample anything. It's really up to like how you hear and how you imagine.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (55:17.495)
Yeah.

The Manhattan Project. Lightworks and...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (55:37.01)
Yeah.

Spinna (55:40.303)
how you interpret the music.

REACT (55:42.906)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (55:43.185)
Yeah, man. I think he had that impact. He had an impact on me as well. I will say this man about you Spinner, that you are definitely.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (56:01.045)
one of the most underrated producers ever. Like seriously, because of what you just said, like I remember listening to the Microphone Master record, you know, just Microphone Master, the Beyond Real record.

me see. There was the Stakes is High. Then like one of my favorite actually moving forward and years like still to this day one of the one of the one of the sexiest records and one of the one of the dopest records I've ever heard was the Babel-Gaberto joint that you did. Was it a Seel De Stante? Yeah.

Spinna (56:46.854)
Se- Seo de Stantii. Seo de Stantii, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (56:51.973)
Just amazing. I mean, just the whole composition, man. I can honestly say that you're definitely one of the most underrated producers in New York, or not even New York, just around, period. Like, because everybody, we all credit Dilla for that time, but you were definitely as equal.

and hot during that time, you know what I'm saying? I just think that, I mean, he had an engine behind him. No, no, please salute. But of course, Dilla did have an engine behind him with Tip and the Cosine. But yeah, man, I think people really need to realize that, man, like those records were incredible.

Spinna (57:26.263)
Thank you. I appreciate that. Yeah, that's...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (57:50.897)
So salute to you, man. I guess moving forward to because I don't want to keep much of your time to. It's very important that I mentioned.

REACT (58:01.718)
How? Oh, okay, go ahead. I was gonna fast forward. Boy, go ahead. What were you gonna say?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (58:05.041)
Go ahead, go ahead, no, go ahead.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (58:09.466)
No, no, no.

Spinna (58:09.491)
Well, we act you have you haven't you haven't said much so I'm curious which what do you have?

REACT (58:13.067)
I

EDDDIEEEEEEE (58:13.277)
I know, right? You know, somebody said today that I talk too damn much. I'm just like, all right. Yeah. But I have questions. And this has been an interview, man, that I've always wanted since we started the show, man. I was just like, I thought about a few people and I was like, man, Spinner is just, Spinner is the guy, man. He's just a worldly DJ, too, man.

REACT (58:19.696)
Yeah, whoever that was said, he talked to me.

Spinna (58:23.63)
W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W

REACT (58:36.939)
How in the, just, how in the hell did you go from all that stuff to hanging out with, yeah, and I'm genuinely curious because I mean, like, I'm in like a, and Eddie will tell you too, like I'm hip hop to the core, man, like through and through. And I'm in this space now where I'm like.

Spinna (58:45.206)
making house records or Stevie Wonder. Ha ha ha.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (59:02.533)
Yeah.

REACT (59:02.946)
Do I make hip hop records? When I sit down in front of my equipment, obviously it's feel, right? With music, it's whatever you're feeling at that current moment. But I find myself just gravitating towards house music a lot more now, creatively.

Spinna (59:22.615)
Bye.

REACT (59:25.142)
How did that happen and when the hell did you meet Stevie Wonder? Really is what the... How did that happen?

Spinna (59:30.782)
Okay, okay, then...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (59:31.793)
Well, but hold on. Yeah, you're right. And I'm sorry I cut you off, Spin. Also, what React, I mean, it's a nice segue to a wonderful segue. Like I was going to say the same thing. When did you decide that you were done with hip hop and you and you made the transition into the house? Because you were one of the first pioneers.

to really make that transition from hip hop to house records. And there's a lot of them right now, you got to watch Eads of the World and there's a lot of them doing it right now. But you were like, literally, I wanna see the original one doing, you've been doing it for a while, so.

REACT (01:00:15.738)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:00:17.59)
Well, I got to credit again, 45 King and my man Kenny Doak because they, to me, they're the, and Marley Marl too. All three of those dudes did both. They did both. They did hip hop and they made house records. Also to correct you, I never stopped hip hop. I just slowed down because I'm picky.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:00:28.945)
They did. Okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:00:39.918)
Yeah.

REACT (01:00:40.157)
Mmm.

Spinna (01:00:43.69)
And as I get older, as I'm growing in the hip hop world, there's a lot more stuff that I can't tolerate as a grown man, lyrically. Lyrically. So I'm picky, you know what I'm saying? I try to work on records that I'm really feeling work with MCs that I'm really feeling. But...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:00:44.201)
Right. All right.

REACT (01:00:44.89)
Facts.

REACT (01:00:54.918)
Totally understandable. I understand.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:00:56.709)
Oh my god.

Yeah.

Spinna (01:01:07.518)
And even with Jigmasters, we have an album in the can that we just, we gotta finish. And we plan to make more records, you know, Apani.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:01:14.353)
Well, no, I bought the last one, which was very dope. I think it was 2016, right? You guys did a, yeah.

Spinna (01:01:22.162)
something like that, yeah, resurgence, yeah. Well, we got stuff in the can. I got people that I've been promising records that I've been working with for a long time to do projects. Aponi is one of them, J Live's another one, Shebam's another one, you know, I got, and I'm working on a record with Homeboy Sam, man. So...

Just to put that in a bottle, I'm not done. I'm not done. I love making beats. I've been buying samples profusely and just stashing them for the years with the...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:01:42.285)
Oh my God. Yeah.

REACT (01:01:42.469)
Hehe.

REACT (01:01:47.407)
course.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:01:52.641)
Yeah, I react. We literally saw him last time we saw you spinner was at the Jean Brown pop up shop. And in comes spinner at the end and Jean has a nice, great, basically of records for Spinner. And I'm just looking like, I know you not man. And please.

REACT (01:01:52.745)
Hehehe

REACT (01:01:58.286)
Yeah, we had Gene and Brooklyn, yeah.

Spinna (01:02:01.406)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:02:16.042)
Yeah, I'm not playing around. I'm not playing around.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:02:22.257)
I never and please forgive me. I didn't mean, because obviously you were doing stuff. Right, there was the BBE project too.

Spinna (01:02:27.714)
No, I know, I know, I know you didn't mean it. I know, I know, I'm just, I'm just for the listeners. For the listeners, for the listeners, I just wanna make it clear because I know some people, some people might be like, he's done? No, I'm not done, I'm not done. But to go back to answer your questions, I loved house music from day one. I learned about it from the beginning, as far as like when New York.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:02:36.538)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:02:40.68)
Right.

REACT (01:02:47.152)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (01:02:53.706)
was impacted, I learned about it then. Because the dudes that I hung out with were all older than me and they were in the clubs. So they would tell me about it as it was popping. Radio played a little bit of it. And if you were in New York in the late 80s, 90s, there was no way to avoid it. If you were going to the clubs, there was no way to avoid it. Even within hip hop, we had, there was a period.

REACT (01:03:15.855)
That's right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:03:19.121)
It was synonymous, right? That's right.

Spinna (01:03:21.366)
Yeah, they were neck and neck, you know what I'm saying? We have this, there's house, this dope house remixes of hip hop records. To me, the David Morales remix of Saturdays is incredible. This dope ass house, there's some corny ones, but there's some dope soulful underground. Clark Kent, another brother, my big bro Clark, who embraced both worlds. He understands club music.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:03:29.553)
Absolutely. Yeah.

Spinna (01:03:50.742)
You know, we have these conversations all the time. It's bigger than hip hop. It's really about good music. So to answer your question about house and transitioning, so as a DJ, my priority is rocking the crowd, right?

REACT (01:03:54.981)
It is.

Spinna (01:04:04.862)
I'm not a hip hop DJ, I'm a DJ first, and I play for everybody, I play good music for everybody. House just happens to be something that I love to play because I love to see people dance. Somehow the dance got extracted from hip hop. It's not promoted in mainstream anymore, you don't see it anymore. Yeah, it's, you know, the BPMs are slower now, and I come from the era of rockin' parties and seein' movement, and seein' movement on the dance floor.

REACT (01:04:16.409)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:04:21.182)
Yeah.

REACT (01:04:22.15)
That's the Tik Tok age, man.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:04:27.794)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:04:34.856)
as far as making house music, it's very gratifying when you can put a track together or do a remix or whatever, and you give it to a DJ, there's no red tape, they play it, people dance to it, period.

REACT (01:04:48.047)
That's right.

Spinna (01:04:49.038)
There's no politics, there's none of that. You know, it ain't hot, it's not hot on the streets, none of that kind of bullsh*t. Give it to the DJ, and it's all, this music is based on feeling and pure emotion, the way hip hop used to be. It ain't really like that no more. It could be.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:04:55.24)
Yeah.

REACT (01:05:04.192)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:05:04.775)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:05:04.882)
It could be, and don't get me wrong, there's some dope hip hop being made, but of course it's not the mainstream stuff. You know what I mean? You gotta really dig for it and search for it. I keep my ear to the underground all the time. I try to stay abreast of what's happening, but.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:05:11.785)
You're right.

Spinna (01:05:22.79)
when it's time for you to go out there and work as a DJ and you got to play for people, you can't play underground hip hop. You got to play what makes the people move. So I got out of the quote unquote mainstream DJ circuit early, like, you know, I made it my business.

around the turn of the 2000s to basically slow down from that whole scene. Because I was doing, I was working hard, especially in New York. I was like, I was, I was, I was doing a lot of parties, man. But when, but when, but when, when radio took over, like, you know, Paola and the commercialization of.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:05:50.15)
I know, I remember.

I remember spin.

Spinna (01:06:03.834)
Hip-hop on the radio and people wanting to hear the same music They heard on the radio in the clubs every week the same records the beginnings of that That's when I bowed out. That's when I was like now I can't do these kind of parties anymore because I don't want to I don't want to get stuck I can't get stuck I love music too much and then I started traveling and going to Europe going overseas going to Japan going to England And I'm just seeing like how good music is

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:06:12.695)
Yeah.

REACT (01:06:17.046)
Yeah, good for you man.

REACT (01:06:27.622)
Yeah.

REACT (01:06:31.622)
Oh, it's tremendous out there. It's a whole different world, man.

Spinna (01:06:33.618)
Yeah, it's more, it's more, yeah, it's a different culture. So I was like, this is where I need to be. You know what I mean? And I just, I just kind of.

REACT (01:06:40.567)
Yeah. Speaking of traveling, you're going to be in Barcelona soon.

Spinna (01:06:44.886)
This weekend, yeah, for Jazz Tronin Festival. And Jungle Brothers is headlining. I'm playing after them, yeah.

REACT (01:06:46.766)
Okay. That's, yeah, that's dope.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:06:48.953)
ooo that's what I'm saying people like this

REACT (01:06:55.163)
Oh.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:06:55.318)
Say words.

Yeah, you know what song I-

REACT (01:07:00.554)
That's crazy. I don't think this will air prior to you prior to you getting over there. But yeah, yeah. But that's cool, man. Yeah, I saw it on the website, the Jazztronica stuff. That's cool.

Spinna (01:07:05.863)
Okay, all right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:07:11.365)
You know, like, you know, the record. Yeah, yeah, no, please. Yeah, yeah, I mean, but what I what I did want to say is like, man, like, how brave of you to do that? When even with DJing, because and making music, you're always doing you're still doing hip hop. That's fine. But you were brave enough to.

Spinna (01:07:12.87)
Oh, and Stevie Wonder, oh Stevie Wonder, we didn't talk about that. We didn't talk about that. Okay, alright.

REACT (01:07:15.326)
Oh yeah, that's coming, yeah, yeah. Yeah, we can talk, yeah, exactly.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:07:40.517)
start putting out house records, you were just like, all right, like, I'm just gonna do this and put these records out. You did the BBE, you were one of the lucky ones, not lucky, like one of the, actually, is it fortunate or, what's the word I'm looking for? Blessed, like, because there was only a few just great people that, great producers.

Spinna (01:07:59.798)
last yeah

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:08:09.629)
that did the BBE series and you were one of them. And I couldn't wait to hear it. And I fully enjoyed yours as well, man. There was a joint that you have a Fante that was, I think it was in, was it, what was the record with Fante? React, if you can find it and play it.

Spinna (01:08:33.615)
Well, I did a few with him though. We did diligence. We did...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:08:38.005)
But on the first BBE, you're here to... Was it here to there?

Oh

Spinna (01:08:48.228)
Nah, he's not on here to there. We did... We...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:08:51.205)
Hold on, hold on. We can always edit this too. I mean, it is, I'm sorry.

REACT (01:08:55.546)
That's, yeah, we'll chop it.

Spinna (01:09:02.134)
We did a record together called Guaranteed that was on Sonic Smash. We did the Diligence joint, which was my tribute to Dilla.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:09:13.349)
Yeah, I remember that, that was crazy. Man, where is this record? Oh, yo, wait a minute. Intergalactic Soul.

Spinna (01:09:18.716)
The last record.

Spinna (01:09:26.078)
Oh, Galactic Soul, yeah, yeah. That's the one you're talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's not BBE though. That came out on another label. Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:09:27.293)
Galactic soul. Yeah, that was it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:09:33.233)
Oh, okay, okay. But yeah, I was just saying like, man, like just, you're one of the ones that did it, man. Like you were brave enough to just say, all right. Even as a DJ too, because you know, myself and React, we DJ and, you know, sometimes I...

REACT (01:09:55.706)
But you know what though? I could, I could speak to that because you know.

keep it a buck, I hate, I just don't play hip hop music anymore. Like when I DJ. I just don't. And I play every weekend. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, faithfully all the time. I just don't play this sh*t. I just, I can't. And it's not that I don't want to, first of all, I play what I want to hear. I know I'm quoting Howe Shoes now, who was on the show a few weeks ago. But...

Spinna (01:10:09.466)
Right.

Spinna (01:10:13.207)
Bye.

REACT (01:10:30.414)
Like you said, it's just a feeling thing. And like, I would prefer to play house music and see people dance, or even if they're not dancing, if I'm playing at like a restaurant or a bar where there's not really a dance floor, but just to see people have a, catch a vibe, I guess, if you wanna say that, you know what I mean? Like it's just, yo, but I play just tons of old stuff, man, just tons of funk.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:10:50.941)
Yeah, he was killing it last week for real on Halloween y'all. It's been, he was...

REACT (01:11:00.038)
um, you know that catches people's attention, you know, and then Yeah Yeah, that's exactly that's exactly what it is, man. Feel feel good. Feel good music girl and

Spinna (01:11:00.087)
Yep.

Spinna (01:11:04.074)
It's to feel good, it's to feel good man. It's to feel good.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:11:06.313)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:11:10.71)
You know, I have a party that I do called Flavors, which is dedicated to 90s, really, because, yeah, it's coming up in LA. Yeah, exactly. Started it in New York.

REACT (01:11:16.95)
Yeah, that's coming up in LA with J-Rock.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:11:22.197)
Ah, with the funky president.

Spinna (01:11:24.126)
Yeah, I started that party in New York in 2000, playing 90s music. And that party is very successful. And the more that time progresses, the more popular that ever and that party gets, because people just want to reminisce and remember what hip hop felt like back then. And it's kind of sad that we're in this state because...

REACT (01:11:28.175)
Mm-hmm.

REACT (01:11:38.01)
That's right.

REACT (01:11:45.934)
back then.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:11:50.586)
Yeah. Heh heh heh.

Spinna (01:11:51.078)
Again, again, like there's some dope records being made, but there aren't, it's not recognized enough to where the masses can appreciate it and know it.

REACT (01:11:51.228)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:12:03.825)
Yeah. Yeah, but you know what? But in real talk, like the masses are, man, because they are a spin, because when I see you, you have a theme. Like you created a theme party, like the Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder joints. Like.

REACT (01:12:04.39)
No.

REACT (01:12:28.926)
Man, listen, all I'm gonna, we need an invite, man. Next time that sh*t happens, man, please. I need to go. That sh*t is crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:12:33.713)
Like I've never seen anything like it man. And when I tell you people, when they, people I'm telling you right now, if you just, I'm sure you can find them on YouTube. Just Google or go to YouTube and find DJ Spinners, the Prince, either Prince Party or Stevie Wonder or the Michael Jackson versus Stevie Wonder.

REACT (01:12:55.467)
Yeah, but that's what I'm saying. Like, there's so many things to talk about. You know what I mean? Like, you even did a remix for MJ. Yeah, you know, there's so much sh*t we could talk about, man. You know, how did that party come about, man? Because like, is that a Spike Lee thing?

Spinna (01:13:03.478)
Yeah, we're almost there.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:13:15.535)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:13:17.736)
No, it's not a Spike Lee thing. It became a Spike Lee adapted it when Michael and Prince transitioned. And the reason why I'm DJing those parties for Spike is because I was already doing them before Spike.

REACT (01:13:32.291)
Ah, okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:13:32.985)
That's right. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, for sure. Yeah.

Spinna (01:13:34.986)
So the Wonderful Party started in 2001 with Barbito. It was Barbito and myself playing. And then he bowed out to Pursue Film and other things in 2008. And you know, other things, books, whatever. And I kept it going. So, and then the Michael Prince Party, that party is called Soul Slam. We just had a, you know, we branded it that so that we're not using the artist's name.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:13:39.269)
Oh, yes.

REACT (01:13:43.322)
Okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:13:44.317)
How's the Bobby?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:13:48.815)
sneakers.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:14:07.473)
Mm-hmm.

Spinna (01:14:08.502)
their IPs. So the Soul Slam brand started in 2002, right after the Stevie Wonder tribute parties. And the reason that came about was, I do these parties with my wife and we were, after the success of The Wonderful, we were like, who else can we do that?

People know, people celebrate, but also has a catalog that can rock a party all night. And the next two big artists, the two biggest artists, are Michael and Prince. You can't really do that with an Earth, Wind & Fire or Barry White or like, you know, there aren't too many legacy artists where you can curate an entire night that speaks to youth culture, pop culture, has dance records.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:14:51.598)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:14:58.652)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:14:59.366)
has underground records and then remixes, house mixes, hip hop mixes. There aren't too many artists like that. Probably not, you know what I'm saying? They either speak to an older generation. I mean that's really it. They speak to an older generation and then we may have, we haven't grown up with it, but...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:15:02.545)
is crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:15:09.115)
Yeah.

REACT (01:15:14.308)
No.

Spinna (01:15:27.35)
The reach is a cap to the reach. Prince, Michael, especially Michael, when it comes to kids and generational influence and popularity, the kids love Mike. They love him. Prince people love, but he's more mature. Like I even personally can tell you that I didn't, I didn't appreciate Prince as an 11, 12 year old because his music, I couldn't understand.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:15:37.149)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:15:41.481)
Thank you.

Spinna (01:15:57.294)
um you know him dressed in a thong on the album cover or some of the some of some of the some of the subject matter that he spoke about but mike was mike well i'm not even saying i'm not gonna say that i'm just saying his sexuality was up front i'm that it was up it was up front it was up front

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:16:00.801)
Yeah, yeah, no. Yo, like, like. Yeah, he was on some real questionable.

REACT (01:16:01.422)
I'm out.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:16:16.665)
No, I mean, I mean, come on. I mean, no, spin, listen, man. I'll play the bad cop. I'm gonna tell you why I'm gonna play the bad cop because first of all, it's, no, I'm gonna play bad cop. But for me, it's Prince, it's Prince over Michael. I'm Team Prince all day. I have been since.

REACT (01:16:29.389)
Oh boy.

Spinna (01:16:42.589)
Hahaha

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:16:45.157)
and I started DJing in 1980, I was 10 years old. And I've always got the Prince record, the 4U record, and I, but I wasn't looking at the album coverage. It meant nothing to me. Like I was, right, I was listening to the music. I look on the back of the album cover. I was very curious to, you know, to know about who was doing what.

Spinna (01:17:02.331)
Yeah, you were listening to the music, which was more important.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:17:15.621)
written, composed, and produced by Prince. And I was just like, huh?

Spinna (01:17:19.02)
Right.

REACT (01:17:19.99)
I think, I think personally Prince was Prince was a more talented musician, but I mean, I mean, come on, bro. We talking, cause if we're talking records.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:17:29.817)
No, no, no. Listen, we can go down. No, listen, we can go down a wormhole with this. It's not about, we're not going to let Prince and Michael and we're going to talk about Stevie hijack, hijack the story about Spinner.

REACT (01:17:36.678)
spin back me up here.

Spinna (01:17:39.78)
Yeah.

REACT (01:17:43.938)
Yeah, we'll talk about Stevie. Okay, we'll talk about Stevie.

Spinna (01:17:45.482)
Right, right. And full disclaimer, this party is not, it was never meant to be, and I met Prince by the way. I met Prince and the first thing he said to me was, the first thing he said to me before he even said hello, was why does it, he said why does it have to be, he's funny, that's funny. He said why does it have to be a Versus party?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:17:49.436)
Yeah.

REACT (01:17:55.693)
How dope.

REACT (01:17:59.754)
Game blouses.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:18:03.084)
Except game blouses.

REACT (01:18:09.83)
Uh.

Spinna (01:18:09.962)
That was the first thing that came out of his mouth. So I made a conscious effort after that. And I told him it's a celebration. It's not a versus, it's not a battle. So I mean, in my marketing and promotion, I always tell people this is not a battle. It's a celebration.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:18:24.873)
Did he walk up to you with a lollipop in his mouth like... ..

Spinna (01:18:28.522)
Hehehehe

REACT (01:18:33.033)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:18:34.929)
Listen, Vince, he probably call you by your real name and sh*t. He probably knew your real name before that, you know, and he's like, listen. Listen, Spinner. You know, but I've always thought that Prince is it for me.

REACT (01:18:38.278)
Stop, oh man.

REACT (01:18:57.318)
Let's talk about Stevie now. Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:18:57.497)
Stevie Wonder, yes please. Your Stevie parties. And I used to think like, man, like, how can he just, how can he do a whole party based on Stevie? And I saw your set, I think I looked on YouTube years ago, and I was like, oh my God, this is incredible. And I see people just floating.

REACT (01:19:20.486)
craziness.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:19:25.129)
Like literally floating in euphoria, man. It looks like the greatest stuff ever, man. I just like, man, look at Spinner, man. Like, this is incredible. Like talk about, and you know Stevie, like the greatest, see? Like, come on, man. Like, how'd you, how'd you, how'd that happen? And how'd you meet Stevie?

Spinna (01:19:48.886)
Um, well, man. So there's been, there were a few early encounters after the first wonderful party. Actually, actually, actually after the second one, because we did it twice in 2001. We did it first in May around his birthday, which is strategically planned. We always plan it around Stevie's birthday in May, you know, May 13th.

That year 9-11 happened and we did it a second time for the people as a healing. So we did it in the fall. And after, when the party was over, of all people to show up at the end was Edwin Birdsong. He came to the party at the end and I met him and he was like, hey man, Stevie knows about the party. He wants to talk to you.

So I actually got a little shook because, but for a reason you might not be thinking of, Babito and I had done these underground mixtapes called Wonder Wrote It around that time. And they were hot on the streets. And he caught wind of it, he heard of it. So I was concerned that

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:20:52.466)
Hahaha

Spinna (01:21:17.122)
when I got on the phone with him, there might've been some issues, you know what I mean? But...

REACT (01:21:21.542)
idea.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:21:22.497)
Yeah. Are you freaking out?

Spinna (01:21:26.706)
I was freaking out a little bit. So I spoke to him and he was like, yeah man, I heard about the party, hope to experience it one day. And I also heard about this mix that you did. And I'd love to hear it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:21:41.335)
You started you started farting and sh*t like nervous like I'm nervous.

REACT (01:21:42.15)
Oh.

Spinna (01:21:46.917)
I love to hear it, I love to hear it. To this day, I think I ended up giving him a copy of that, actually, the second time I met him was like 2004, backstage at the Apollo, went to go see him perform.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:21:52.265)
You're right.

Spinna (01:22:05.942)
He, Richie Havens was on that bill that day. And so was, I met backstage, I met, yeah. And I met, what's his name? Johnny Kemp, that made Just Got Paid. He was backstage too, yeah. But I met him and I think I handed him the mixed CD, the one that wrote it, at that moment, in that moment. But again, you know.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:22:08.978)
Ooh!

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:22:12.521)
Richie Havens, are you kidding me?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:22:20.57)
Yeah, yeah.

Spinna (01:22:34.942)
full circle, paying tribute to a legend. He recognizes that I'm honoring him and it just led to a great rapport, a great relationship. And as a result of that, I've been to his crib, I've been to his studio. I have done two remixes for him that didn't come out. One of them's on YouTube, you can find it. It's called My Love is on Fire. And...

REACT (01:23:01.154)
Yeah, we have that.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:23:03.261)
We do

Spinna (01:23:04.178)
I opened up for him at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:23:07.741)
Oof.

Spinna (01:23:09.75)
And in 2000, I think that was 2012, he does these events at the United Nations called A Message of Peace. He's an ambassador for peace for the United Nations and he puts on these concerts. And he called me to open for him at the UN.

REACT (01:23:30.734)
That's cool.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:23:30.993)
God, man, listen, man. Are you still to this day, I mean, first of all, there's many, many levels of cool and flexed. Like you super flexed on, that is a super flex, man. Like, top three greatest, go all time. Like, musical genius, they, you know, was Penn.

Spinna (01:23:34.082)
you know.

REACT (01:23:41.696)
Yeah, that's super flex.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:23:59.545)
you know, a musical genius, Eddie Murphy, that was Eddie Murphy's quote about Stevie Wonder. He was, you know, that was his. And that's the truth, right? Am I saying musical genius? But you getting calls from Stevie, like, like man, I can't even just.

REACT (01:24:21.787)
Just hanging out, driving, driving to the supermarket, you get a phone call, you look at your phone and Stevie Wonder's calling you, like that's pretty wild.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:24:28.681)
Ha ha!

Spinna (01:24:30.549)
I have missed calls from Stevie where I'm freaking out. Freaking out like, why, how come I didn't see this dude call me and he left me voice messages? I have voice messages saved on my phone that I need to actually archive. Ha ha ha.

REACT (01:24:32.662)
Yeah, that's incredible. Yeah, God bless. That's crazy.

REACT (01:24:40.469)
Aw man.

REACT (01:24:44.898)
Oh, that's crazy. That's crazy. That's so I would feel so bad.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:24:47.399)
Man.

Spinna (01:24:52.414)
I feel like, I recently discovered this. I recently discovered this.

REACT (01:24:53.706)
I would feel so bad. Imagine like you put that sh*t on Do Not Disturb and Stevie calls you. That's terrible. No, no, not at all, not at all. You better have him as the emer- Yeah. You know, you can set your iPhone up to have emergency contacts. So even if your sh*t's on Do Not Disturb, like it'll, certain contacts will ring. Make sure you put Stevie in that just in case you gotta put your sh*t on Do Not Disturb.

Spinna (01:24:59.926)
That's a phone call you never want to miss. Even if he calls you at like 3 in the morning, you got to answer that call.

Spinna (01:25:17.15)
Yeah, that's a short shot right there. That's a short shot.

REACT (01:25:21.37)
Yeah, that's crazy, man. Oh my goodness, wow.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:25:25.861)
Listen, I mean, I mean, I mean, just, we're talking about levels and upon levels upon levels of greatness. I'm telling you people, I always do this. I always have like a damn PSA. This man, well, React, we have to come up with something about bubble wrapping. We have to bubble wrap DJ Spinner. Yes, he is bubble wrapable, man.

REACT (01:25:46.206)
What do you mean? We ready? Yeah, no, he's 100%. He's the, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:25:52.777)
I mean, for real, man. Well, no, we're not finished with this damn... I'm glad you applauded, but I mean, where we at? Yeah, reacts like, it's almost time. But, but, you know, your homies with Jeff, too, as well, the great Jazzy Jeff.

REACT (01:26:04.038)
I'm sorry.

REACT (01:26:08.857)
Yeah.

REACT (01:26:14.07)
I was gonna say, if there's two DJs on this planet that need to be bubble wrapped, is Jeff and Spinnin'.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:26:21.049)
Absolutely.

Spinna (01:26:22.694)
You're putting me on the same level as the jazzy...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:26:27.142)
No, no, no. I've heard you DJ plenty of times, man. And literally, there's only really, that's why I said you're underrated. You don't get the credit, man, and you should. There's some bubble-wrappable DJs, and I can only really think of, I mean, there's Jeff, there's yourself. I'm serious, bro.

I'm not playing. And I would definitely say scratch. Yeah, like scratch is just, I mean.

Spinna (01:26:59.758)
scratches a beast.

Spinna (01:27:04.161)
He's not human. He's part machine.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:27:05.969)
No, no. He is, man. I mean, but we say you, man, but look at what you've accomplished from DJing at the parties early on in your days to Binghamton College parties, Syracuse parties that you did, to DJing.

REACT (01:27:06.514)
Hmm

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:27:35.505)
You're worldly. You know what I'm saying? That's, I mean, do you ever sit down and think about that? Like, man, like.

Like what happened? Like what is going on? Like seriously, I'm getting, I'm missing calls from Stevie Wonder. Like.

Spinna (01:27:47.634)
Yeah

Spinna (01:27:53.958)
I'm always thinking about the next thing, man. I'm always moving forward. Bro, I gotta make a new album. That's my priority right now. It's overdue. Another BBE type record though, like where I'm stretching out. That's what I'm talking about.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:27:56.078)
What's next, Ben?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:28:02.93)
Okay.

So my question.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:28:10.413)
Okay, okay. I was gonna ask you that too. And actually, and I can actually ask this because I want to ask you this question.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:28:20.669)
um in your for your bag when you when you're sitting down now first of all what are you working on what equipment are you working on

REACT (01:28:28.611)
Oh yeah, we need an accident.

Spinna (01:28:29.834)
I work with this.

REACT (01:28:33.378)
He's gonna flex right now, watch. He's gonna be like, I got it. Do, do, do.

Spinna (01:28:36.919)
Nice.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:28:37.166)
Here comes the flex. I already saw his mixer. He has the spin knob mixer. It was just crazy. Team Machine! Yeah! Team Machine, baby! Yes! Yo, did you have a hard time? At first, like I had a hard time because I was an MP guy. What was it? I mean, for me, it was like, you know, okay, where's the spin?

REACT (01:28:43.059)
Ah, there you go.

Old faithful, old faithful. Yeah.

Spinna (01:28:53.346)
That's what I use.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:29:05.191)
I mean, we had a spin, but it wasn't.

Spinna (01:29:08.35)
It took me a while to embrace it, but once I embraced it, I got into it pretty quickly. Coming from an MPC 3000 especially, I had the first Maschine MK1 for a year before I messed with it. Same thing with Ableton. It just took me a while to wrap my head around this new...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:29:11.773)
Yeah.

REACT (01:29:31.746)
Yep.

Spinna (01:29:33.002)
technology, kind of scared of it. I was even like that with Pro Tools when I first got it. It was sat in a closet for like a year. Because I was coming from...

REACT (01:29:41.667)
Ableton is so ridiculous. Every time you open it, it's like, I mean, every time I open it, I find some new sh*t. And I'm like, man, I didn't know you could do that sh*t. Yeah, it is a super, super DAW.

Spinna (01:29:53.15)
Yeah, it's crazy. It's so intuitive. It's so intuitive. And people tell me... Think of it... Yeah, yeah, I am. Yep.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:29:54.737)
Yeah. Are you still calling your studio, are you still calling your studio the Thickamajig? Yeah.

REACT (01:30:03.534)
That's great.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:30:06.589)
Super flexing man. I just want to hang out with you spinner. I do Like you know like I think you owe me a Yeah, like we're not yeah. Yeah, I know yo I know the couple spots up here like I live in White Plains And when I tell you there's a couple spots that are untapped pause I'm telling oh, yeah, no walk to you up

REACT (01:30:11.174)
Ha ha

Spinna (01:30:14.998)
Let's go buy some records.

REACT (01:30:28.966)
couple spots in Connecticut too, Norwalk.

REACT (01:30:34.507)
It's a spot in her walk, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:30:35.585)
I'm telling you, not even touched. You can tell like, dude, I found my old record.

Spinna (01:30:39.063)
Really?

REACT (01:30:43.53)
Oh yeah, that's right, show him. He was digging and he found his record and the guy just gave it to him.

REACT (01:30:52.795)
Crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:30:54.505)
I found this record, the true criminal record.

Spinna (01:30:59.983)
Wow, I remember that.

crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:31:04.229)
It was a $14 record and I was like, this is my record. And I was like, my sons were with me and they were like, they were even surprised. Like, they was like, I think that was a, for the first time, wow, dad's kind of cool moment. You know what I'm saying? So I was like, this is, you know, this is my crew. This is it. My name's on it. You know, E-Dow-Dow. Anyway, I got the spots, man.

REACT (01:31:20.934)
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Spinna (01:31:22.006)
Yeah, that is a cool moment.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:31:34.239)
I'll treat, but not on the records because I know you got money.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:31:42.233)
Man, Spender, man, I truly, man, I appreciate, we appreciate you, the world appreciates you, man. You are worldly, like Brooklyn to the world, man. You've been everywhere. Boiler Room, that's another thing. You were in the Boiler Room when the Boiler Room was kind of hot, when it was hot, when they had DJs that were, you know, now Boiler Room, you know, it's kind of watered down a little bit.

REACT (01:31:43.974)
this guy.

Spinna (01:32:04.226)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:32:10.021)
You did it when it was really hot. You did BBE. Man, you got one of the greatest party records ever. The balance record. You know what I'm saying? Jig Masters. You've worked with dumb remixes of Mary J. Blige. You've worked with the best De La Soul.

Spinna (01:32:31.498)
Did you, do you actually know the Mary J. Blige remix? Cause a lot of people don't know what I remixed because my name is not, my name is not on the record. It's, it's a, it's, it's beyond, it's a Beyond Real production remix. It's not a DJ Spinner remix, even though it's my remix. So that, it is a remix, it's a cover.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:32:38.518)
I have...

No, um...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:32:48.389)
It's a remake record, I know that too. It's a cover. Oh my God. I have the cover, I have it. I mean, I don't have the record, but I know it was a cover, I know that.

Spinna (01:33:01.074)
I'll give you a hint. We talked about who's song, the artist that's covered, we talked about that artist on this show.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:11.926)
Aw man, don't do this to me.

Spinna (01:33:14.953)
It's right under your nose. Yeah, Stevie, but what song?

REACT (01:33:16.617)
Stevie?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:20.448)
Um...

Spinna (01:33:22.87)
I give you another hit, it's a duet.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:27.62)
God.

Spinna (01:33:27.716)
It's Mary J. Blige and somebody else.

REACT (01:33:33.058)
Is it on your website? Days like this? Is that what I'm looking at? That's...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:33.449)
We're gonna have to-

Spinna (01:33:35.862)
Nah, there's like, this is, nah, we're talking about Mary J. Blige here, we're talking about Mary J. Blige.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:37.018)
Nah, nah, no.

REACT (01:33:42.029)
Yeah, I'm just reading your bio on your website. I keep it real.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:33:42.155)

Spinna (01:33:57.13)
Nope, that's Steve, that's the Stevie remix.

REACT (01:33:59.95)
That's Stevie, yeah. Man, I don't know.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:34:03.234)
Oh, no, I heard it. It was, it was a cover. God dang it.

Spinna (01:34:07.538)
It's a Stevie Wonder song, sung by Mary J. Blige and someone else.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:34:14.505)
Was it always? Ass, ass, see? Yeah, see? I had it. God dang it. Damn it. Whatever. I'm trying to keep it more PG in here now, man, because my mom is watching too much, watching the show.

Spinna (01:34:16.258)
Well, as, yeah. That's the song. Yeah.

REACT (01:34:22.314)
Mm-hmm

REACT (01:34:31.522)
Future house producers, hold on one second, quick question, all these new guys that are coming out, like house music wise, who's like your favorite, I wanna hear your favorite, who's your favorite house guy right now? Cause I got a few, but I'm just curious to know like where your thoughts are.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:34:33.959)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:34:50.991)
Woo! Man!

Spinna (01:35:00.502)
You know what? Let me go on my, I gotta check in my Serato real quick because my, my.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:35:07.929)
He doesn't need it because he has a whole folder of his own stuff that he can play all night. And no, I'm just playing. No, I know. I'm proud, I'm proud. Yo, I'm truly proud of you, bro. Like I really am, man. Like not too many producers get to span the cross, the globe, so to speak. And...

REACT (01:35:12.37)
Oh no, I know, no, I'm just, you know, we're just chopping right now, I'm just curious. Man.

Spinna (01:35:19.255)
Yeah, let me...

Spinna (01:35:22.69)
Thank you, my brother.

REACT (01:35:24.675)
Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:35:36.481)
and really do it, man. Like, and also I'm really, you know, I'm really happy that you are of good health now too. Like you had a little bump in the road around your travels, man. And just to see the love too, man. People, this guy is loved and he got the, come on, look at him. He got a wonderful smile, man. Look at him, look.

Spinna (01:35:51.339)
Yeah.

REACT (01:36:04.747)
Hehehehehehehehe

Spinna (01:36:06.312)
That was a true eye-opener and a blessing, you know, when that happened, to see the world come together like that.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:36:09.525)
Yeah, man. I'm truly, I'm, yo, man, I was, I was like, man, like, please, like, I'm glad.

REACT (01:36:09.996)
Yeah, that's good.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:36:23.345)
You know, your head is above water basically, and you're okay, man. Like for real, like we don't need to get into that. I'm just glad that everything's good. Oh, you playing records? Ooh, that was a chop.

Spinna (01:36:27.97)
Thank you, man. Thank you.

REACT (01:36:35.351)
Oh, sorry.

Spinna (01:36:37.59)
Oh, so I like, I like, I like Byron the Aquarius a lot. That's my guy. Crackazat is really dope. There's a guy named Sheen-O Black. There's Doug Gomez, even though he's been around for a while, but he's putting out a lot more music now than ever. I'm just looking through my Serato.

REACT (01:36:42.709)
Ah, okay.

REACT (01:36:47.905)
Mm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:02.537)
Do you ever wonder what happened to guys like Stephen Silcarly? Like, like...

Spinna (01:37:07.526)
Still currently still around man. A lot of the guy a lot of the old-school Chicago dudes are still out there doing making records Yeah, absolutely for the four to the floor sound is definitely we can come back

REACT (01:37:13.57)
And that style of house music's starting to make a comeback too.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:16.825)
And he has smash.

REACT (01:37:20.427)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:24.169)
Can we play like one of his, one of his, oh wow.

Spinna (01:37:28.562)
Yeah, go ahead. I think you should play days like this because that's the anthem. That's the one everybody knows for the listeners who may not know it. That's the one to play because I just looked at YouTube today and that joint has like 2.7 million plays on there. So it's quite popular.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:28.933)
Anyway, it is Stevie Wonder record.

REACT (01:37:47.398)
Oh sh*t. All right. I'm splicing in post. I don't think I have it. Do I got it right here?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:47.903)
and

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:37:53.721)
Oh man, shame on me. No, I didn't. I mean, I had, yeah, we'll splice it in. Cause I had, I had, I think I have your Stevie record that you did, My Love Is On Fire.

REACT (01:37:58.314)
No, I don't have it. Yeah, I'll spice it in. I'll spice it in post. I'll spice it in for sure.

REACT (01:38:13.338)
That's right. No.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:15.529)
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

Spinna (01:38:16.875)
stiffest

REACT (01:38:21.539)
No.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:23.745)
No, all these records are crazy.

REACT (01:38:25.358)
This sh*t is fire though. I know this ain't house music, but this sh*t is crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:32.525)
Oh yeah, that's the one with Fonte. But no, no. Just play this Stevie record. I love that record.

REACT (01:38:33.819)
Yeah. Mm-hmm.

REACT (01:38:44.419)
Yeah, it's just...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:46.021)
There you go.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:49.681)
You thought Steve was coming after you I asked for this record, why?

Spinna (01:38:53.994)
Nah, we good on that one. He loved this one.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:38:57.561)
Yeah, right.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:39:10.849)
I still think that you guys should do a full album. Ooh.

Spinna (01:39:15.202)
wish. That's on him.

REACT (01:39:19.019)
Hehehe

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:39:19.177)
Yeah, you can bring it back. Tell them to bring out the old arm.

REACT (01:39:22.714)
Just don't miss that phone call, because he might be like, you know what, I'm going to do an album with Spinner. Picks up the phone. Doot, doot, doot.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:39:26.44)
Right.

REACT (01:39:33.274)
This sh*t is crazy.

REACT (01:39:42.711)
What year did you make this?

Spinna (01:39:44.706)
2005.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:39:48.402)
Mmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:40:03.582)
Oh my god.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:40:20.285)
Oh, come on, man. Are you kidding me? This is fire. Man, it's been. We truly appreciate you, man. Man, I can't wait with the future hoes, man. You've always been just upper echelon with it. You got some of my favorite records. You have the greatest, I think one of the greatest party records ever, man.

REACT (01:40:20.762)
Ah, this sh*t is so great. This is so great.

REACT (01:40:31.575)
Yeah, thank you, bro.

Spinna (01:40:40.805)
Thank you.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:40:50.029)
And I'm truly looking forward to, man, like I'm a year older than you, but it doesn't matter, man. Like I'm a fan, man. And I truly appreciate, we appreciate you coming on to the shop, man. We appreciate you, man. Oh yeah, wait, oof, I can't wait.

REACT (01:41:01.346)
Oh yeah, yeah. That next Soul Slam, we there. Don't worry, we comin'. Yeah, we comin'. We comin'. As it was last month too, I saw the videos. Yeah, oh yeah.

Spinna (01:41:11.778)
Thank you. Now those parties are fun. Those parties are always fun, especially the ones, well, the one we just did in Four Green Park with Spike Lee, that was like 30,000 people out there. It was incredible. Incredible.

REACT (01:41:22.594)
Yeah, it was craziness. Craziness.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:41:22.829)
I saw that. Yeah. It looked like some of that looked like an episode of, um, like, no, it's like Dave Chappelle type, you know, because they were like, everybody was dancing. He is the guy pop locking and everything. Look, everybody was happy. It was beautiful.

REACT (01:41:29.37)
Look there, like a fest, it was almost like a festival.

Spinna (01:41:39.306)
Nah, it was beautiful. It was beautiful. It was like a Brooklyn Woodstock.

REACT (01:41:46.042)
That's crazy. Yeah, it's beautiful, man. That's great. That's good.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:41:46.097)
Yeah, it was, man. That's one thing about Brooklyn I do like, other than the traffic. Like, and the raccoons in Brooklyn, because they kind of hardcore. Like raccoons in Brooklyn, they'd be wild in Brooklyn, bro. I don't know if you ever ran into a raccoon in Brooklyn, but them sh*t. Yeah, they bout it, bout it, bro. Trust me. I work in Industry City, bro, and them motherf*ckers are like, what's up?

REACT (01:41:53.554)
Oh, and the BQE is...

REACT (01:42:00.794)
Hehehehe

Spinna (01:42:04.927)
I don't want to. I definitely don't want to. Ha ha ha.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:42:15.474)
Like, but there's nothing like a Brooklyn party man and what you do man, it's just man, like you're really

REACT (01:42:23.798)
What's the spot in Brooklyn? There's a big Brooklyn Mirage. That's a big spot. Yeah, yeah. It's like half outside, half inside, right?

Spinna (01:42:31.066)
Yes, big spot.

Spinna (01:42:35.677)
Yeah, I saw Black Coffee there last year. It was crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:42:38.225)
You still do the, any Brooklyn Bowl things coming around? I like that venue.

REACT (01:42:38.753)
Oh yeah, he's dope. He's dope.

Spinna (01:42:45.646)
That venue, there's always something going on there. I'm not sure who's there right now, but yeah. I'm not there, no. I'm not there. You saw who there?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:42:49.425)
Now I'm talking about you. Like, I mean, tip.

REACT (01:42:50.849)
I saw Q2 bed broken ball.

REACT (01:42:55.13)
Tip. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, Tip. Nah, DJ. He was DJ.

Spinna (01:42:56.718)
Q-tip, what, performing or just hanging out? Oh, okay.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:43:01.829)
I used to go to the Quest Love joints. He used to do.

Spinna (01:43:04.906)
Yeah, he had a residency.

REACT (01:43:05.988)
Yeah, Tip was DJing, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:43:07.697)
But I mean, come on man, at any time Stevie's showing up, like what's up, I see what you playing.

REACT (01:43:15.341)
Ha!

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:43:20.973)
I got a little laugh out of that. It's all right. There's Stevie jokes around there like that he even did with Shaq. We already said about that Shaq, the whole joke about Shaq, he was like, what's up Shaq? He walked into an elevator and sh*t. And it was just him and Shaq. And he, Shaq didn't know, obviously we all know, he was like, what's up big dog?

like Shaq was like, we clowning people, you know, but man, no, I would imagine man. But like I said, man, you are greatness, man. We need to bubble wrap you bro. And we really truly thank you man. Because you know, this

Spinna (01:43:52.291)
Stevie

Spinna (01:43:57.734)
He got jokes for days, man.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:44:15.773)
This platform that we have, it's loose. It's loose conversation, man. I don't want to be all stuffy and off of a paper and hey, about your, you know, whatever. This show is just like really just chopping it up. And yeah, man, we appreciate you coming up.

Spinna (01:44:30.05)
Thank you. There's one thing, thank you, one thing I wanna plug is my Apple radio show. I have a show on Apple Music. Yeah. Yeah, so good. I wanna plug that, cause I've been putting a lot of work. It's called Here to Their Radio. It's basically, I named it after the BBE album. Here to Their Radio. And it's basically me celebrating

REACT (01:44:37.462)
Oh man, how in the world did I miss that? I meant to bring that sh*t up to you, I'm so sorry. Yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:44:38.258)
Wow.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:44:46.034)
Is it here and there?

Here to.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:44:53.289)
That's right.

REACT (01:44:53.958)
Let's go.

Spinna (01:45:00.618)
everything that's iconic and legendary about good music, black music, soul, R&B, fun, hip hop, house, I play everything and I've done, I've had some incredible guests on my show.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:45:08.286)
Yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:45:13.973)
Yeah, I've seen like and you're like in you're like a lot of episodes in now, right?

REACT (01:45:14.298)
How dope.

Spinna (01:45:20.482)
I'm like 146, this week will be show 146. And last week's show was my tribute to Melbourne more for her birthday. And I literally spoke to Melbourne more today. She called me to thank me for... She's active. She's active, man.

REACT (01:45:24.294)
That's crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:45:25.362)
salute.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:45:36.417)
Man, I see I see mobile more on IG and she is like one. She's wonderful. Right. Just interacting and a legend, man. But yeah, man, shouts to mama more. And people, please tune in to. Is it here to there?

REACT (01:45:52.758)
Yeah, I'm so sorry I didn't bring that up, man.

Spinna (01:45:56.03)
Not here to their radio, yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:45:58.321)
Yes, here to their radio, Apple radio.

REACT (01:46:01.098)
Yeah, and you're on season three, right? It looks like it's on, you're in the middle of season three, it looks like.

Spinna (01:46:04.322)
What's that?

Spinna (01:46:11.307)
Yeah, so it might be, is it season four now? Yeah, it might be season, well, if you see season three, it might be season three, but.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:46:15.475)
Hehehe

REACT (01:46:18.207)
Oh man, oh you just did it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:46:21.481)
W-w-w-um, before you go, w-w-

REACT (01:46:23.544)
You just did a 45 King episode? Oh man, I gotta listen to that sh*t.

Spinna (01:46:26.254)
Yes. Yeah. And it's crazy. It's crazy.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:46:30.429)
Yeah. Real quick, before we go, where can we, is Spinner a resident or are you, after you get back from traveling the world because, you know, flex on us, like he's going to Spain, but any spots?

REACT (01:46:31.365)
Yeah.

REACT (01:46:46.82)
Hehe.

Spinna (01:46:46.862)
So I literally just started, last week I started doing the slow jam and smooth groove sets at a new spot called, ah man, blanking out right now. It's in Tribeca.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:47:03.991)
Alright.

REACT (01:47:07.959)
Oh, local, if you're in New York.

Spinna (01:47:09.394)
Yeah, it's very local. Hold on, I wanna get the name of this place. Why am I trippin'? Hold on, I'll tell you right now, hold on a second. But anyway, I started doing these slow jam sets called Galactic White Storm during the pandemic on Twitch. It was every Thursday, and we decided to bring this party to light in real person. So we started doing them.

at this new spot called, what is it called? Blues? Hold on, let me go to my Instagram. That's the only way I'm gonna be able to see it. I wanna get this right. Yeah, I wanna get this right. But, but.

REACT (01:47:48.578)
Mm-hmm. It's all good.

REACT (01:47:54.072)
Yeah, and your Twitch is popping too. You got like 20,000 followers on Twitch and sh*t, damn. We got 19 followers on Twitch.

Spinna (01:47:59.662)
Yeah, man, so, you know, that happened because I... ..

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:48:04.608)
And growing. Boss.

Spinna (01:48:06.39)
That happened during the pandemic because I hosted some of my legendary events. The Wonderful Party turned 20 years old during the pandemic. So I did a whole... Yeah. So I did a whole stream.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:48:15.45)
Man, oh my God, are you serious? Oh my God. No, go ahead.

REACT (01:48:16.598)
Man.

Spinna (01:48:24.554)
for the 20th anniversary during the pandemic. And also on, I don't know if you remember this, but they did a whole Stevie Wonder birthday party on Instagram and I closed it out, I closed it out on my Twitch on Instagram. So it went through Instagram on Twitch. So, you know, these kinds of events really boosted the numbers real crazy during the pandemic.

REACT (01:48:26.202)
Oh my gosh.

REACT (01:48:36.773)
Mm-hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:48:37.8)
Yes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:48:43.249)
Yeah, yeah, I remember seeing that.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:48:52.689)
It can, but also man, like it can also get better. As I said, like I would like to, like that party is gonna live forever, bro. For real, like you're gonna be, you're literally gonna be, you know, you won't be a slave to it because it's wonderful, man. But you started something that literally people, like thousands, hundreds of thousands of people are looking forward to.

Spinna (01:49:05.806)
Hope so.

Spinna (01:49:21.014)
Well, the joy in it and what keeps it interesting is I always try to find new ways to play the music. And bro, I'm still finding new Stevie Wonder discoveries. After 20 years, I'm learning about stuff that he was involved with, recordings. You know, there's even a Mel- Like I was going through my, like looking for Melba Moore music for the show and I found there's a Melba Moore record with Stevie Wonder.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:49:34.737)
Hmm

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:49:40.425)
man.

Spinna (01:49:48.494)
on it and I found that she covered a Stevie Wonder record in like 1970 that I didn't even know about.

REACT (01:49:55.15)
Hmm.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:49:55.657)
That's crazy. I mean, like, man, I know we tried to end, we literally tried to end the interview a while ago, but I do have one more question about the whole STEM works now, like STEMs, like, are you excited about that?

REACT (01:50:04.358)
That's right.

Spinna (01:50:12.614)
So I sent you a couple of beats where I freaked stems heavy. If you listen to the whole, what is it called? The Whole Darn Summer. Did you hear that beat yet? You gotta play it. Just play it.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:50:21.365)
Yeah, yes, I have. React has it. It's a.

REACT (01:50:26.342)
Where is it at? Hold on.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:50:29.091)
Yeah.

Spinna (01:50:37.978)
Play it, then I'll explain to you how I put that beat together, and then you understand how much I appreciate stems.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:50:41.949)
Yeah, the whole damn summer, yeah.

REACT (01:50:47.426)
Oh, okay. Hold on. Nah, you sent it in...

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:50:49.425)
You got it, bro.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:50:54.321)
It was in the last one where it said, we transfer Risen to the Chops, Risen to the Chops, and then it's a folder.

REACT (01:51:04.47)
Oh, the hold on, oh yeah, the hold on something. Yeah, yeah, okay, my bad.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:07.269)
Yeah, yeah.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:11.73)
Oh, yes, I remember.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:29.543)
Uhhhhhh

REACT (01:51:34.578)
Oh, I don't know what happened. That sh*t was so fire.

Spinna (01:51:35.842)
Let it go, you gotta let it go, you gotta let it go. Bring it, bring it, bring it back, bring it back.

REACT (01:51:43.642)
Man, my shoes, my, my shoes.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:45.285)
The sh*t was so fiery it shut down our meteor board. Hahaha.

Spinna (01:51:48.206)
You gotta bring it back. You gotta run it back. Run it back.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:51.963)
God.

REACT (01:51:52.614)
Come on with this goddamn program, man. I gotta have a talk with the people over at Riverside. What is happening? That sh*t just stopped. Terrible, I'm so sorry. Why did I do that?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:51:57.117)
Yes, Ben. Yeah.

Spinna (01:51:59.106)
Right back.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:52:08.701)
No, wait, no, it's okay because we can, we can, we can. Bye.

Spinna (01:52:12.042)
Ssss... ssss...

REACT (01:52:12.178)
Yeah, you could tell the story if you want, but I'm going to have to splice the audio in post.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:52:13.913)
We'll spice it in.

Spinna (01:52:18.05)
Well, the way I put that beat together was I had to separate the drums, the bass, re-chop the drums, take pieces of the bass, replay the bass line. And there's...

REACT (01:52:24.41)
Mm-hmm.

REACT (01:52:36.066)

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:52:52.509)

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:52:56.285)
Just when I thought, just when I thought Vitamin D had the greatest flip of 7 minutes of funk.

Oh my God. What is happening?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:53:23.413)
UGH

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:53:37.898)
Yeah

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:53:43.759)
Oh my god. Did you make this for somebody because I feel like oh man.

REACT (01:53:51.482)
What was Vitamin's joint called again?

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:53:55.465)
Vitamin D had a flip. It don't even matter. You know vitamin D?

REACT (01:53:59.466)

Spinna (01:54:03.918)

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:54:06.085)
Oh my, yeah, yeah. Yeah, Vita flipped it too, but ooh, I think like, I just got chills. This sh*t is different. Like it's different. It is as, it's as dope, man. Like, ooh. And man, I'm proud of you, bro. Like for real, like I am, man. I can't believe it, man. Like I just, because I seen it since, since the days of Binghamton B.

REACT (01:54:10.52)

Spinna (01:54:25.634)
Ha ha ha!

Spinna (01:54:34.668)
Yep.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:54:34.705)
You know what I'm saying? Like, I don't know, man. You made it.

Spinna (01:54:41.034)
Man, I'm still making it. I still got, I got a lot of work to do, man. I keep it moving.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:54:41.737)
I'm serious. I know, but you're so beloved, man. And that's the beautiful thing, man. I truly appreciate all that, man. Like, I'm a super fan of all that, B. Yeah.

Spinna (01:54:55.03)
Thank you, brother. Appreciate it.

REACT (01:54:57.582)
How are you stemming everything out? Serato or something else? Cause I find, I find the algorithm in Serato to be a little suspect.

Spinna (01:55:01.87)
Um, I-

Spinna (01:55:05.982)
Okay, so off the record, I don't wanna, cause you know Serato supports me, I don't wanna sh*t on them for the interview. But I use, yeah. Yeah, I use STEM. I'm between STEM, STEMverter and lalala.ai. Those are the three ones that I use, depending on what I'm trying to get done. But STEMverter.

REACT (01:55:12.406)
Oh no, that's okay. Shout out to OP and good folks over at Serato.

EDDDIEEEEEEE (01:55:13.457)
