WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Liv Morgan retains against Becky Lynch, Gunther targets Damian Priest (2024)

Morgan survived a steel cage match thanks to interference from Braun Strowman and Dominik Mysterio

Two days after Liv Morgan defeated Becky Lynch at King and Queen of the Ring to become women's world champion, Morgan was forced to give Lynch a rematch on Raw. The rematch came in the form of a steel cage match and Morgan was once again victorious thanks to a failed attempt at interference from Dominik Mysterio.

Mysterio came to the cage in an attempt to help Lynch escape and regain the title, trying to right the wrong of when he slid a chair into the ring for Lynch on Saturday, only for Morgan to use the chair to win the title. Once again, his attempt to help Lynch backfired as he accidentally slammed the cage door on Lynch's head thanks to a rampaging Braun Strowman.

Morgan added a bit of spice -- and some confusion -- to the situation after the match, kissing Mysterio before the show went off the air.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Liv Morgan wins cage match against Becky Lynch, kisses Dominik Mysterio

Women's World Championship – Liv Morgan (c) def. Becky Lynch in a cage match to retain the title. After the expected back-and-forth action, Mysterio ran to the cage and opened the door, imploring Lynch to exit and win the match. JD McDonagh and Finn Balor came to the cage to yell at Mysterio and ask what he was doing and Mysterio said he had to "make it right" after accidentally helping Morgan win the title at King and Queen of the Ring.

Eventually, this brought Braun Strowman out to chase down McDonagh (see below). This led to Strowman smashing Mysterio into the cage door, whacking Lynch on the head in the process and allowing Morgan to escape. Morgan stared down Mysterio on the entrance ramp before kissing him, with it unclear how Mysterio felt about the situation as the show went off the air.

With reports that Lynch's WWE contract expires on Saturday and that the two sides didn't seem close to reaching a deal in the coming days, any real drama was somewhat sucked out of who would win the cage match. The match itself was fine, but commercial breaks during a cage match main event really suck the viewing momentum out in certain ways. The Mysterio and Morgan thing has been somewhat teased a few times and it will be interesting to see where it goes even if Judgment Day drama isn't as interesting as it once was and continues to be a bit of a drag on the world heavyweight title reign of Damian Priest. Grade: C+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Gunther, Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre confronted each other to open the show. Gunther was out first talking about his King of the Ring win, which guarantees him a world heavyweight championship match at SummerSlam, which brought out Priest. As Priest talked about that future match, McIntyre came to the ring as the next man up for Priest, leading to a conversation about their upcoming Clash at the Castle match until Braun Strowman interrupted the scene for his match.
  • Braun Strowman def. JD McDonagh via pinfall with a tilt-a-whirl powerslam. Finn Balor and Carlito both tried to interfere after McDonagh had attacked and injured Strowman's knee but Strowman got the win. McDonagh delivered a chair shot to Strowman's back after the match, which only made Strowman angry and the rest of the show featured small shots or mentions of Strowman chasing McDonagh backstage.
  • Ricochet def. Ilja Dragunov via disqualification after Bron Breakker ran in to deliver a spear to Ricochet.
  • Authors of Pain def. The Creed Brothers via pinfall with What A Rush on Brutus Creed.
  • Sheamus and Ludwig Kaiser brawled after a Sheamus promo discussing his briefly being sidelined by Kaiser. After Kaiser interrupted, the two brawled from backstage into the area before being separated.
  • Lyra Valkyria def. Kairi Sane via pinfall with a crucifix pin. Valkyria countered the diving elbow with a kick to set up the pin. Iyo Sky smashed up some furniture backstage after Sane's loss.
  • Rey Mysterio def. Carlito via pinfall before Judgment Day took out the LWO. Finn Balor ran in to try and help Carlito but that effort failed. As the LWO was about to put Balor through a table after the match, Damian Priest entered and took out Dragon Lee and then Mysterio before staring down Balor and Carlito.
  • Bronson Reed def. Otis via pinfall with a Tsunami. Chad Gable interrupted as Otis had finally gained momentum, trying to prevent Otis from doing the worm and focus on finishing off Reed. This let Reed get back in the match and win shortly after. Gable then called everyone in Alpha Academy to the ring. Gable said he was going to discipline Otis and removed his belt. Maxxine Dupri stopped Gable from delivering a whipping to Otis, leading Gable to kick her out. Sami Zayn then interrupted, begging Otis to stop listening to Gable. Gable attacked Zayn and Otis stepped in when Zayn got the upper hand but not when Gable was getting the better of things. Otis then appeared sad as he left the ring with Gable.
